Job Summary

As an Environmental Technician, this position performs field tests to monitor the environment and investigate sources of pollution, including those that affect health. Responsibilities include setting up and collecting ambient air samples, calibrating and testing air monitoring instruments, performing data collection checks, and using troubleshooting techniques to repair instruments.

This position may be available for remote work within Arizona (up to 3 days per week in the office or hoteling).

Job Duties
  • Works approximately 50% in the field conducting hands-on instrument maintenance/service, verifications, calibration, and completing required service logs, field sheets, and documentation in accordance with SOPs, QAPPs, and the EPA QA Handbook.
  • Conducts remote air monitoring site visits for assigned sites according to the EPA schedule and ADEQ QAPPs.
  • Understands the operation of air monitoring sites including ambient air monitoring instruments, meteorological instruments, data acquisition, sample setup and retrieval, and related equipment.
  • Data verification for continuous and manual instruments; review of data using reports, graphs, charts or databases to identify outliers, malfunctions, or anomalies.
  • Documents and completes electronic field sheets, site logs, instrument logs, instrument change-out sheets, chain of custody, vehicle logs, travel logs, and sample shipping.
  • Responds to customer inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
  • Performs or leads projects under the direction of a unit lead or manager.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
  • Knowledge of gaseous and particulate instrumentation, Auto-GC, communication equipment, quality assurance and control, data entry using relational databases, environmental monitoring techniques and equipment, and environmental regulations.
  • Ability to set up, program, and troubleshoot communications equipment; general knowledge of Air Vision; ability to build sites, create import templates, and diagnose data polling issues; basic knowledge of CRBasic and other programming languages.
  • Knowledge/experience in environmental technology, mechanical engineering, or electrical technician work.
  • Ability to operate, maintain, and calibrate environmental monitoring equipment; collect representative environmental samples according to SOPs; follow guidance documents.
Selective Preferences
  • ET 1:
    Associate’s degree plus 0-3 years of environmental monitoring experience, or a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field with no prior experience. Training may be evaluated for equivalency.
  • ET 2:
    Associate’s degree plus 4-7 years of environmental monitoring experience, or a Bachelor’s degree or higher with 1–5 years of experience. Training may be evaluated for equivalency.
  • ET 3:
    Associate’s degree plus 7–10 years of environmental monitoring experience, or a Bachelor’s degree or higher with 6–8 years of experience. Training may be evaluated for equivalency.
