Position OverviewAre you an innovative and enthusiastic professional with a passion for safety culture? The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is eager to welcome a diligent Safety Specialist 1 to play an instrumental role in the administration, training, and management of safety programs across our district and county operations. Your expertise will help ensure compliance, improve practices, and minimize risk across all phases of transportation work, contributing to a reduction in motor vehicle accidents and protection of community lives.
ResponsibilitiesAs a Safety Specialist 1, you will be responsible for observing, inspecting, and providing safety‑related guidance to district and county personnel; conducting safety‑related trainings and seminars; and performing field and facility inspections. You will also provide vital technical assistance and perform administrative work in support of the safety program.
Specific functions include:
- Assisting with providing recommendations and resolutions for safety concerns and recommendations to reduce accidents and personal injuries.
- Participating in the evaluation of Safety Innovations provided by employees and helping to determine compliance with current policies.
- Using skill and judgment to determine if a worksite is unsafe, consulting with county and district management staff, and providing detailed remedial action reports.
- Full‑time employment.
- Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch.
- Telework:
You may have the opportunity to work from home part‑time, up to 3 days per week, provided you have a securely configured high‑speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Oil City. Telework is subject to change at any time. - Salary:

- Successful completion of the Safety Specialist Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
- Five years of technical experience in conducting safety inspections, safety investigations, or safety training, or performing technical highway maintenance or highway construction work; or
- One year of technical experience in conducting safety inspections, safety investigations, or safety training, or performing technical highway maintenance or highway construction work, and a bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Occupational Safety and Health Management, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related field; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
- This position requires obtaining an active Advanced Safety Certificate issued by the National Safety Council’s Safety Training Institute within two years of starting in this job.
- This particular position also requires possession of a current driver’s license which is not under suspension.
