HDR is looking for a Trenchless Engineer to join our national Trenchless Services team. The role provides significant opportunity for professional growth and development. The Trenchless Engineer reports to the Trenchless Services Engineering Lead and supports the execution of design and field services for trenchless engineering projects, including engineering, design and construction applications.
OverviewThe Trenchless Engineer will contribute to the Trenchless Program by applying experience to support engineering and design practices such as hydraulic fracture and inadvertent returns analyses, front end information collection (geotechnical investigations and survey coordination), feasibility evaluations of trenchless design and construction, and constructability assessments from planning through construction. They will manage data, ensure quality control of design and construction data, assist with risk management, and may serve as a project manager on trenchless projects.
Travel to field sites will be required as needed, with travel frequency and duration workload dependent.
- Perform desk top route selection and evaluate feasibility for design and construction of trenchless crossings.
- Carry out site reconnaissance visits and develop subsurface investigation programs to determine construction feasibility for trenchless methods.
- Evaluate surface and subsurface conditions to determine feasibility and preferred construction technique.
- Coordinate with discipline leads and production staff to support trenchless design deliverables.
- Maintain regular communication with clients regarding project status and technical discussions related to trenchless construction applications.
- Estimate quantities of materials, installation loading, and other resources for trenchless pipeline installations.
- Assess application of trenchless technologies (e.g., Horizontal Directional Drilling, microtunneling, tunneling, Direct Pipe) and help define preferred methods.
- Perform calculations to determine carrier pipe and coating specifications and define workspace requirements for construction equipment at crossing locations.
- Prepare and review project documentation, including specifications, bid packages, drawings, design reports, and data sets.
- Build knowledge of software models for trenchless pipeline design and interface with multidisciplinary project teams.
- Develop permit application documents and ensure compliance with applicable industry standards and governing codes.
- Prepare field engineering and as-built documents; update department standards and capture lessons learned from projects.
- Support HDR’s project delivery goals by focusing on successful project execution and applying PMO processes; coordinate with subconsultants as needed.
- Provide field construction oversight and reporting, monitor daily activities, and communicate field data in a timely, high-quality manner.
- Bachelor's degree
- Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license recognized by the licensing board for the position location
- Experience with Microsoft Office;
Micro Station or equivalent software - Experience with Geo Studio/Ensoft slope stability, settlement, seepage and deep foundation analysis as appropriate
- Experience with Bentley geotechnical data management and visualization software (gINT/Open Ground/Leap Frog) as appropriate
- Willingness to participate in HDR’s employee-owned culture
- Minimum 10 years of professional experience in consulting/engineering, with trenchless methods and preferably HDD, microtunneling, and/or Direct Pipe
- Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification
- Experience in AutoCAD Civil 3D
- Experience in a remote work environment
- Strong writing and computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel
- Ability to manage multiple assignments, prioritize tasks, and work independently while staying in communication with teammates across locations
- Travel is required; frequency and duration depend on project needs
- Subject to pre-employment drug test
