Overview
Lead Plumbing Engineer – Buildings (Kansas City, MO). Design, coordinate, and mentor plumbing systems for healthcare, higher education, laboratory, mission‑critical, and commercial projects across the public and private sectors. Full‑time, on‑site position focused on technical leadership and client engagement.
Responsibilities- Lead plumbing system design from conceptual through construction documents for domestic water, sanitary waste, vent, storm, natural gas, fire suppression, and specialty laboratory & medical gases.
- Guide and mentor junior engineers, technicians, and other design staff, overseeing project budgets, task completion, technical calculations, schematics, and regulatory analyses.
- Conduct on‑site observations of existing and proposed conditions, collecting and analyzing data from surveys, legacy blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
- Develop design deliverables including calculations, equipment sizing, engineering reports, design narratives, and construction plans and specifications.
- Manage multi‑disciplinary coordination with mechanical, electrical, fire protection, architectural, and civil teams; integrate design with BIM workflows (Revit/AutoCAD).
- Own quality and code compliance (IPC/UPC, NFPA 13/14/20, local ordinances), coordinate design reviews, and stamp/seal deliverables as appropriate.
- Support construction administration: RFIs, submittal reviews, shop drawing verification, and site visits to verify installation against plans and specifications.
- Maintain health and safety plans (HASPs), and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies.
- Continuously learn and apply latest engineering practices, maintaining credentials and advancing in the field.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Drive technical direction and quality for building plumbing systems, ensuring compliance with codes and standards.
- Engage directly with clients, partners, contractors, and regulatory authorities to facilitate informed decision‑making and project success.
- Mentor and develop junior designers, fostering a collaborative and high‑performance team culture.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Architectural, Building System, Plumbing, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
- 7–10 years of post‑education plumbing or mechanical design experience in building projects.
- Portfolio spanning at least two sectors: healthcare, higher education, mission‑critical/data center, laboratory, process or advanced manufacturing, or commercial real estate.
- Experience with building planning, design, and construction management, including renovation, expansion, rehabilitation, and new design projects.
- Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations on construction and design aspects, applying applicable regulations and policies.
- High proficiency in technical writing, office software, load calculation methods, discipline‑specific design software (Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam), and spreadsheet tools.
- Well‑defined knowledge of plumbing and mechanical engineering codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements (IPC/UPC, NFPA, local authority requirements).
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
- Ability to work on schedules that may extend beyond typical workday or workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project‑specific requirements.
- Candidates must reside in or relocate to the Kansas City area; this is not a fully remote position.
- ASPE Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD).
- Professional Engineer License (Kansas/Missouri).
- LEED AP Certification.
- Master’s Degree in Engineering.

CompensationExpected Salary: $103,500 - $140,000 (state of Colorado, internal equity, and geographic location).
