Description

WSDOT is currently seeking a Transportation Engineer 4 to oversee the Northwest Region (NWR) Laboratory as the NWR Lab Supervisor and Regional Radiation Safety Officer. This role manages the materials laboratory which runs tests that confirm the materials used during construction conform to the required specifications. This ensures newly constructed projects are safe and reliable. The position supports the agency’s mission, strategic plan goal areas and safety of the traveling public by supervising and managing the NWR materials test laboratory.

It oversees the NWR laboratory, which conducts critical testing in support of all construction projects in the region, as well as managing nuclear density gauges. In coordination with the NWR Materials Engineer, this position is responsible for overseeing the NWR pits and quarries that WSDOT owns.

What to Expect
  • Serve as final reviewer of all materials test reports generated by the NWR lab before submitting results to project offices.
  • Oversee and ensure staff complete all required equipment verification and calibration.
  • Plan, assign, and review lab staff schedules, workload, and testing accreditations.
  • Facilitate the upkeep and maintenance of testing equipment.
  • Review and understand all test methods and verification procedures.
  • Ensure Department of Health (DOH) nuclear density gauge licensing requirements are met; facilitate the submittal of all radiation badges.
  • Respond to emergencies related to nuclear density gauges in the field.
  • Understand and communicate permit requirements for use of NWR aggregate sources in WSDOT contracts.
  • Collect and submit Discharge Monitoring Reports to the NWR Materials Engineer and Department of Ecology (DOE).
Qualifications
  • Construction Materials Testing:
    Experience completing materials testing for state or federal transportation projects.
  • Supervision and Workload Management:
    Experience as a supervisor managing employee performance, schedules, and workload.
  • Technical Knowledge and Procedures:
    Strong understanding of AASHTO, ASTM, and Western Alliance for Quality Transportation Construction test procedures for construction materials.
  • Licensure and Certification:
    Valid driver’s license. Radiation Safety Officer certification or ability to obtain within six (6) months of starting employment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Materials Testing & Construction Inspection

    Competency:

    Demonstrated proficiency in transportation construction materials testing and inspection, often gained through experience at the Transportation Engineer 3 level, and hands‑on use of nuclear density gauges.
