Title: Senior Substation Physical Engineer
Location: Remote US
Job Overview: ICF is seeking a Senior Substation Physical Engineer to lead the design and execution of high‑voltage substation projects (typically 69 kV to 500 kV). The role focuses on delivering excellent quality work for our clients and provides clear career progression to a Supervising Engineer position.

You are a highly motivated engineer who takes pride in the services you provide, ensures project deadlines are met, and can work productively from home without direct supervision. The role requires deep knowledge of physical layout, bus design, equipment selection, grounding, and constructability, as well as experience mentoring junior staff.
Responsibilities- Lead the design and preparation of substation physical design drawings, including one‑line and three‑line schematics, general arrangements and sections, electrical details, grounding and lightning protection plans, conduit and cabling layouts, and low‑voltage panel designs.
- Prepare engineering studies such as AC load, illumination, grounding, and lightning shielding.
- Develop bill of materials based on design criteria.
- Coordinate with protection & controls, civil/structural, and drafting disciplines to ensure high‑quality deliverables.
- Support client meetings, technical discussions, and project planning.
- Participate in site visits and constructability reviews.
- Incorporate vendor information into design deliverables and apply client standards.
- Maintain company QA/QC processes and ensure compliance with industry codes (IEEE, NESC, NEC) and utility standards.
- Continuously improve engineering, technical, and professional knowledge, skills, and performance.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers and designers.
- Demonstrate leadership potential for transition into a Supervising Engineer role.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (power systems preferred).
- At least 3 years of experience in substation physical design for electric utilities.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within 6 months.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Micro Station, or similar design tools.
- Familiarity with IEEE, NESC, and utility substation design standards.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and mentor junior staff.
- Leadership qualities to support career advancement.
- Experience leading substation projects modeled in 3‑D (Autodesk Inventor).
- Knowledge of substation grounding studies (CDEGS) and Agi
32 illumination software. - Advanced user of Microsoft Word and Excel.
