Power Systems Application Engineer
The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit‑miles of high‑voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state.
The NYISO’s Operations department invites applications for a full‑time Power Systems Application Engineer. The role involves maintaining the electric power system model used by the Energy Management System (EMS), Business Management System (BMS), Outage Scheduling System (OUS), Dispatcher Training Simulator (DTS) and the Transmission Congestion Contract (TCC) applications, supporting SCADA/EMS advanced applications, ICCP links, control center visualizations, the Power System Explorer/Data Engineering (PSE/DE) Tool, and Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) data.
ESSENTIALDUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain the transmission network and generation resource models that support day‑Ahead and Real‑Time energy markets and the TCC market.
- Ensure integrity of power system models through Business Owner Quality Assurance procedures.
- Develop and implement ICCP data requirements for the ISO State Estimation function in coordination with NY Transmission Owners and neighboring control areas.
- Provide Power System Operations Dispatcher support and operator training for EMS applications such as DLF and SCADA.
- Develop and maintain software and operating procedures for special market and operating conditions.
- Support modeling and software changes for new resource types, aggregations, and emerging technologies.
- Supply additional power system models for testing and training on emerging resource technologies.
- Maintain sub‑zonal tie‑line definitions and associated PI measurement data for Billing and Settlement applications.
- Maintain and support real‑time security analysis functions.
- Maintain and support Common Information Model (CIM) station one‑line diagrams, hand‑drawn station one‑lines, and tabular displays for Real‑Time operation functions.
- Validate PMU test data and coordinate with Member Relations.
- Support Wide Area View visualization applications, control center one‑line diagrams, side‑wall visualizations, and enhanced State Estimation.
- Maintain the Power System Explorer/Data Engineering (PSE/DE) Tool software.
- Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Electrical Engineering with coursework in power systems, power system components, and mathematical modeling of power system components. Master’s degree (MS) in Electrical Engineering is desired.
- Three to five years of experience in power system engineering, unit commitment operation, operations or a related discipline; knowledge of state estimator programs desired; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or government regulations; write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, vendors, Market Participants and the public.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical inference, plane and solid geometry and trigonometry; apply fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
- Apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems; deal with abstract and concrete variables.
- Intermediate competency in the Windows operating environment using MS Office, database spreadsheets, e‑mail and internet programs; working knowledge of UNIX desired.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear, stand, walk, sit and use hands to perform routine office tasks. WORKENVIRONMENT
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Contact with staff and the public will occur. Travel may be required for meetings, conferences and training. This position may require work on nights, weekends or holidays.
At the NYISO, remote work is balanced with onsite collaboration. In this role, you will be required to work onsite at our Rensselaer, NY location several days per week, with the option to work remotely on the remaining days, and will be expected to respond to all business needs that may increase onsite requirements.

HOW WE COMPENSATESalary Range: $78,500 – $131,100 USD.
