Overview
Planning and Management (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City’s streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality. The Design & Construction (D&C) unit provides professional engineering oversight for geometric design elements of NYC roadways, working with civil engineers, urban designers, planners, and others to evolve curb geometry, street plans, pavement markings, and the application and refurbishment of NYC’s 250+ million linear feet of pavement markings.
As an Assistant Civil Engineer in D&C, you will assist in improving traffic safety through review and design of Overhead Sign Structure (OSS) messages on limited‑access roadways in New York City. The role involves evaluating OSS locations and messages against the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), designing ground‑mounted sign alternatives, creating contract plans, specifications, proposals, and estimates, and collaborating with other NYCDOT and NYSDOT divisions.
Responsibilities• Review OSS locations and messages to ensure compliance with MUTCD and public needs.
• Evaluate feasibility of ground‑mounted signs as OSS alternatives.
• Design replacement sign panels that meet federal standards and site‑specific needs.
• Assemble contract plans, designs, specifications, notes, proposals, and estimates for independent or integrated contracts.
• Work collaboratively with the D&C unit and other divisions to deliver quality outcomes.
• Communicate effectively in written and verbal form with all stakeholders.
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering and one year of full‑time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work;
- OR a baccalaureate degree and a Master’s degree from an accredited college in civil engineering.
- Valid driver’s license in the state of New York, maintained throughout employment.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, GUIDESign, Auto Turn, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Familiarity with AASHTO, MUTCD, NYC Street Design Manual, and NACTO publications.
- Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
• Less than 2 years City Service – New Hire Rate: $66,330.
• 2 or more years City Service – Minimum Incumbent Rate: $76,279.
• Position eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program.
• New hires must reside in New York City for the first two years of employment. Appointments are subject to OMB approval.
