Job Summary

The Environmental Engineer Specialist in the Groundwater Mining and Industrial Permits Unit will utilize applied engineering knowledge and skills to conduct reviews of Aquifer Protection Program (APP) permit applications for mines and various industrial facilities. In this role, you will research, plan, and perform engineering duties in the prevention, control, and remediation of environmental hazards using various engineering disciplines to conduct reviews and write permits in accordance with Arizona’s environmental regulations.

Occasional travel for site visits around the state and attendance of in‑person meetings at the Phoenix office.

This position is available for remote work on a full‑time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangements).

Job Duties
  • Review and evaluate moderately complex permit applications, reports, facility designs, plans of moderate complexity and cost estimates for mining and industrial facilities.
  • Participate in site visits, data evaluation, inspections, and investigations regarding environmental topics.
  • Perform complex environmental calculations based on provided methodologies.
  • Provide rigorous technical guidance to mining and industrial facilities, responsible parties and individuals to ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
  • Assist in preparing environmental guidance documents.
  • Perform or lead projects under direction of senior staff or a manager.
  • Respond to customer inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
  • Provide compliance assistance to responsible parties while conversing with a variety of subject matter experts including contractors, senior engineers, geologists, hydro geologists, and others.
  • Accelerate resolution of engineering issues through collaboration and assistance.
  • Provide innovative solutions to reoccurring compliance issues.
  • Utilize Lean concepts to drive ongoing continuous improvement.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge of mining operations and/or various industrial processes. Experience with tailings dams or leach pads is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Agency policies and processes; interpret and understand environmental regulations, investigation techniques and statistical analysis.
  • Knowledge of Project Management Principles.
SKILLS:
  • Strong communication skills (written, oral, and interpersonal) and ability to work effectively in a team‑based collaborative environment.
  • Attention to detail, quality assurance and control, and adherence to standard work.
  • Microsoft and Google Suite skills and strong ability to use technology.
