The Civil Engineer II will provide engineering and project support for the National Forests in North Carolina (NFsNC) Bridge Program, focusing on the assessment, design, drafting, contract development, and construction oversight of trail and roadway bridges. This role supports the full lifecycle of bridge and stream-crossing projects—from initial field assessments through design, permitting, and construction closeout.
What does a typical day look like?You will:
Field & Assessment- Conduct or oversee field site assessments of storm-damaged bridges and related infrastructure.
- Collect baseline survey data to support design of repairs, replacements, or new structures.
- Assist in evaluating multiple engineering courses of action based on site conditions.
- Plan, develop, and manage bridge project work as directed by the engineering program.
- Produce or review construction drawings, design packages, exhibits, technical reports, and specifications.
- Perform engineering design services including calculations, plan development, cost estimating, and CAD drafting (AutoCAD Civil 3D).
- Support contract preparation and procurement activities for bridge construction.
- Inspect bridge construction sites for conformance with plans, specifications, codes, and schedules.
- Document construction progress with detailed notes and photographs.
- Identify deficiencies and recommend corrective actions to the COR.
- Assist with responding to RFIs through product research and application of best practices.
- Coordinate with Public Services, District staff, Planning/NEPA teams, and external partners.
- Support development of standard engineering templates, detail libraries, and cost databases.
- Provide mentorship and technical guidance to other engineering staff when applicable.
You might be the engineer we’re looking for if you have:
- Authorization to work in the U.S. permanently,
without sponsorship
. - Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (Master’s preferred).
- At least 5 years of structural/bridge engineering experience
, including design and plan development. - Experience preparing construction cost estimates and technical specifications.
- Proficiency in Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D for design and plan production.
- Strong understanding of bridge and stream-crossing design principles
, both theoretical and practical. - Ability to conduct field surveys and interpret geotechnical, hydrologic, and site conditions.
- Strong communication and coordination skills working with multidisciplinary stakeholders.
- Familiarity with FEMA, FHWA, USFS, or federal land management/transportation programs is a plus.
- PE license preferred but not required.
