Traveling Construction Materials Technician II
Terracon invites applications for the Traveling Construction Materials Technician II position. This role involves 100% travel throughout Texas, working on high‑profile projects such as transportation, commercial buildings, wind farms, and more across diverse geographical areas.
Job DescriptionThis position requires frequent travel to multiple sites, performing field testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials (soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel). The technician communicates with project managers, engineering technicians, client representatives, and contractor representatives regarding site conditions, project requirements, testing protocols, and results. Material samples are transported to the laboratory, and data is tabulated, prepared, and submitted in written and digital reports for daily transmittal to the Terracon Project Manager.
Equipment, vehicles, and work areas are maintained and cleaned. The technician may assist with scheduling and dispatch of other technicians to project sites and must adhere to strict safety standards.
- Perform field testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials such as soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel.
- Communicate results and observations to project managers and other relevant personnel.
- Transport material samples with proper documentation to the laboratory for further analysis.
- Prepare and submit data and observations in written and digital reports for daily transmittal.
- Maintain and clean equipment, vehicles, and work areas.
- Assist in scheduling and dispatch of technicians to project sites.
- Adhere to safety standards and perform pre‑task planning.
Roles And Responsibilities
- Perform testing, observation, and inspection as directed and trained.
- Provide clear documentation of findings and results.
- Conduct basic data analysis to verify accuracy before submission to the Project Manager.
- Communicate information to Project Manager and other personnel as directed.
- Assist higher‑level technicians on complex tasks.
- Maintain assigned equipment and related calibration.
- Drive a vehicle such as a Ford F‑150 or equivalent.
- Follow safety rules and practices for all projects and report any safety issues or concerns to management.
- Maintain quality standards on all projects.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 2 years of materials testing experience.
- Experience with laptop computer use and Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
- ACI certification in one or more of the following areas:
- Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I
- Concrete Strength Testing Technician
- Certified in radiation safety and Nuclear Density Gauge operation.
- Successful completion of related internal safety certifications.
- Certifications in one or more of the following areas:
- NICET Level II certification in Construction Materials Testing (Asphalt, Concrete, Soils).
- NICET Level II certification in Geotechnical (Construction, Laboratory, Exploration, Generalist).
- ICC certification in Reinforced Concrete, Spray‑applied Fireproofing, Structural Masonry, Prestressed/Post‑Tensioned Concrete, Structural Steel – Bolting, Structural Steel – Welding.
- American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Associate Welding Inspector (CAWI).
- American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II certification in Visual Testing (VT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Dye Penetrant Testing (PT), Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT).
- Other relevant national, regional, state, or local materials certifications as determined appropriate by Terracon’s Department Manager.
This position has been categorized as a "Remote Only" role. Remote employees work from home or another location without a designated workspace at an office.
The national standard salary range for this position is $19.50–$27.50. The base range may be adjusted based on location, and final compensation is based on individual qualifications and experience.
