Mechanical Design Engineer

Newmarket, Suffolk | Office based with flexible working

Some engineering roles are about maintaining the status quo.

This one exists because a business is scaling fast and needs sharper thinking, stronger processes and engineers who want to grow with it.

Our client is a growing, highly technical manufacturing business that has recently invested heavily in its people, systems and production facilities. With demand increasing and projects moving from prototype through to full production, they are now looking to add a Mechanical Design Engineer to their design and production engineering team.

This role sits at the heart of that transition. You will work on new product development while also supporting the evolution of existing designs as they move into higher volume manufacture. It is hands on, collaborative and rooted in real engineering challenges rather than theoretical work.

The role

You will join a small but highly experienced mechanical design team, working closely with production engineering and specialist technical colleagues. Projects typically run between six months and a year, giving you the chance to see designs through the full lifecycle rather than handing them over and moving on.

Your focus will include:

* Producing detailed mechanical designs using 3D CAD

* Supporting the transition from prototype to production, including hands on fabrication and testing

* Carrying out tolerance analysis and applying GD&T principles

* Creating and maintaining engineering drawings and documentation to recognised standards

* Contributing to continuous improvement of tools, processes and design methods

* Supporting both new developments and existing products as manufacturing scales

This is a role for someone who enjoys problem solving, cares about build quality and wants to understand how their designs perform in the real world.

The team and culture

The environment is collaborative, informal and grounded. Think jeans and T shirts rather than corporate dress codes. The team communicates constantly across disciplines, so clear communication and curiosity matter just as much as technical ability.

The business has a genuine long term mindset and is particularly open to engineers who are early in their career and want to be developed rather than boxed in.

Training is actively encouraged, with a strong budget available for courses, software training and professional development.

What they are looking for

This role suits someone in their second or third role, or a strong graduate with relevant experience, who is keen to build depth in mechanical design and manufacturing.

Key requirements include:

* A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline

* Around three years’ experience in mechanical design for manufacture, or strong early career potential

* Experience designing through the full product lifecycle

* Confidence producing engineering drawings to recognised standards

* A practical understanding of materials, finishes and manufacturing processes

* Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach

* Experience with Solid Works is beneficial, but training is available for engineers coming from other CAD systems.

Package and benefits

The business has put real thought into creating a package that supports long term retention and work life balance.

You can expect:

* Salary between £30,000 and £40,000 depending on experience

* Annual bonus of up to 5 percent of salary, company performance based

* 25 days annual leave, increasing with service

* Private medical insurance, including family cover

* Pension with 6 % matched employer contribution

* Salary sacrifice options

* Gym membership and cycle to work scheme

* Core hours with flexitime, including an early finish on Fridays

* Working from home on Fridays once probation is complete

This is a strong opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer who wants to deepen their technical capability, work closely with manufacturing and grow with a business that is clearly on an upward trajectory
