Job Title:

Remote Environmental Scientist Job Description

We are seeking qualified Environmental Scientists and Geologists to join our team as Site Managers, supporting the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Petroleum Restoration Program. You will oversee all aspects of the assessment and remediation of petroleum-contaminated sites, working towards regulatory closure under the supervision of a Florida licensed Professional Geologist (PG) or Professional Engineer (PE).

Responsibilities
  • Conduct in-depth research of contaminated sites, focusing on the origin of the petroleum discharge, site-specific geology and hydrogeology, and any historical data.

  • Develop a comprehensive scope of work for site assessment and remediation towards regulatory closure.

  • Provide technical oversight of cleanup operations, including generating cost estimates and managing Agency Term Contractor purchase orders.

  • Review and approve assessment, remediation documents, and invoices timely.

  • Communicate regularly with Agency Term Contractor staff, property owners, and FDEP staff.

  • Research assigned petroleum sites using tools like Google Earth and legal documents.

  • Identify site ownership, release circumstances, and potential impacts on neighboring plots.

  • Draft scopes of work for necessary actions such as assessment, remedial design, and monitoring.

  • Select and negotiate with contractors on behalf of the FDEP.

  • Monitor contractor status regarding schedule, budget, progress, and quality.

  • Conduct final reviews of work to recommend next steps, aiming for site closure.

Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 1 year of relevant environmental consulting experience, including knowledge of state petroleum programs.

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, geology, or a related field.

  • Proficiency in environmental remediation and site assessment.

  • Familiarity with the FDEP Petroleum Restoration Program and Chapter 62-780, FAC.

Additional

Skills & Qualifications
  • Postgraduate degree may substitute for one year of experience.

  • Ability to effectively review and prepare technical documents.

  • Familiarity with FDEP SOP 001/01 field procedures is advantageous.

Work Environment

This is a fully remote position, with a preference for candidates residing within a two-hour radius of Tallahassee, Tampa, Orlando, or West Palm Beach. You will work closely with a team of 45 geologists, scientists, and engineers, with occasional visits to the FDEP office or field sites. The role offers a stable, long‑term opportunity with a supportive team culture, allowing a balanced work‑life schedule of 40 hours per week without after‑hours stress.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 – $26.00/hr.
