Traveling Construction Materials Technician II at Terracon
Job SummaryThis position involves 100% travel throughout Terracon’s Eastern Midwest division including Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia. You will work on high‑profile projects such as transportation, commercial buildings, wind farms, and more. This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys traveling, working on various high‑profile projects, and seeking to advance a career in construction material testing.
General Responsibilities- Perform field testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials (soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, steel).
- Communicate with project manager, engineering technicians, client representative, contractor’s representative, and others regarding the site, project requirements, testing, observation, and inspection results.
- Transport material samples with associated identifying documentation to the laboratory for further testing and analysis.
- Tabulate, prepare, and submit data and observations in written and digital reports for daily transmittal to the Terracon Project Manager.
- Maintain and clean equipment, vehicles, and work areas.
- Assist with scheduling and dispatch of technicians to project sites.
- Adhere to strict safety standards.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Performs testing, observation, and inspection as directed in accordance with training and specified procedures.
- Provides clear documentation of findings and results.
- Performs basic analysis of data to verify accuracy before communication and submittal to the Project Manager.
- Communicates information to Project Manager and other personnel as directed.
- Assists higher‑level technicians on complex tasks.
- Maintains assigned equipment and related calibration.
- Drives a vehicle such as a Ford F‑150 or equivalent.
- Follows safety rules and practices and other safety requirements for all projects.
- Remains responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 2 years of materials testing experience.
- Experience with laptop computer use and Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
- ACI certification in one or more of the following areas:
- Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I
- Concrete Strength Testing Technician
- Certified in radiation safety and Nuclear Density Gauge operation.
- Successful completion of related internal safety certifications.
- Certifications in one or more of the following areas:
- NICET Level II certification in Construction Materials Testing – Asphalt, Concrete, Soils.
- NICET Level II certification in Geotechnical – Construction, Laboratory, Exploration, Generalist.
- ICC certification in Rebar, Fireproofing, Structural Masonry, Prestressed/Post‑Tensioned Concrete, Structural Steel – Bolting/Welding.
- American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Associate Welding Inspector (CAWI).
- ASNT Level II certification in Visual Testing, Magnetic Particle Testing, Dye Penetrant Testing, Radiographic Testing, Ultrasonic Testing.
- Other national, regional, state, and local materials‑related certifications requiring experience and written examination will also be considered.
National standard salary range: $19.50–$27.50 per hour, adjusted based on the applicant’s location and experience.
