- Lead the development and ongoing maintenance of our internal estimating wiki, supporting the standardization of estimating processes across the organization.
- This includes bidding procedures, quantity takeoffs, supplier RFQs, and scope drawings and checklists.
- Support management of our international supply chain by developing and strengthening key supplier relationships, as well as maintaining supplier capacity and cost databases.
- Develop and refine estimating proforms and templates, and assist the Business Development team with tracking project costs using Smartsheets and spreadsheets.
- Organize historical project data into meaningful charts and KPIs.
- Mentor and train estimating staff.
- Build and maintain a strong understanding of the mass timber market, including suppliers, costs, availability, species, and lead times, while tracking market fluctuations and communicating key insights internally and externally.
- Conduct detailed reviews and quantity takeoffs of drawings and specifications, with a clear understanding of how they relate to our scope of work.
- Liaise closely with structural engineers, general contractors, and architects to communicate clearly and gather feedback related to scope, schedule, site conditions, sustainability requirements, and other project constraints.
- Obtain and evaluate cost and schedule input from suppliers and subcontractors, including issuing and managing competitive RFQs/RFPs as required. Prepare concise, comprehensive, and strategic sales estimates for turnkey engineering, manufacturing, fabrication, and installation services.
- Lead bid review meetings with Business Development and Senior Management to defend estimates and help shape winning proposal strategies.
- Transition successful projects to the Project Management team, ensuring continuity of relationships as final scope and pricing are confirmed.
- Follow up with Project Management after project completion to capture lessons learned and incorporate them into future estimates.
- Collaborate with our Engineering team and Business Development Engineers to support clients and maintain relationships throughout the consulting and preconstruction phase, where we act as Engineer of Record (EOR). Provide estimating input, constructability guidance, and clear communication with contractors to support successful project outcomes.
- Engage with new and prospective clients, leveraging in-depth knowledge of the company’s business, methodology, and past projects to respond to inquiries and define potential scope.
- Perform “go / no-go” analyses on project opportunities to assess suitability based on workload, strategic priorities, and key market sectors.
- Support the Business Development team in preparing written proposals, informed by a thorough understanding of each project’s design features, constraints, and scope requirements.
- Experience in the construction or engineering industry is preferred.
- 5–8 years of experience in estimating, preconstruction, or a related field; experience with mass timber is an asset but not required.
- Undergraduate education (Bachelor’s degree or Diploma) in Construction Management, Estimating, Engineering, technical studies, or a related discipline.
- Highly detail-oriented, with a strong focus on accuracy, data organization, multitasking, and a service-oriented mindset.
- High level of proficiency reading and interpreting drawings, specifications, and related project documentation.
- Significant experience with Excel, including the development of advanced and efficient spreadsheets; strong aptitude for quick and accurate calculations.
- Significant experience with Bluebeam or similar takeoff and document review software.
- Experience with 3D modeling tools such as Rhino, Grasshopper, or Sketch Up is an asset.
- Experience with CRM platforms or estimating software is an asset.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with strong grammar and spelling.
- Understanding of engineering fundamentals is an asset.
