Systems Engineer, Sales Engineer
£30–40k + bonus | Port Solent, Portsmouth (office-based, some hybrid)
A technical, customer-facing role for engineers who enjoy practical problem-solving, complex systems, and real-world applications — not scripted sales or commission pressure.
RS Aqua is a UK ocean technology business supplying advanced sensors and systems to industry, research and government. Our work is technically demanding, high-trust and long-cycle. Accuracy and credibility matter.
RS Aqua is part of General Oceans, a global group of ocean technology companies delivering advanced sensors, platforms and systems to marine science, defence and offshore markets worldwide.
The roleThis is a technical commercial role within our sales team, aimed at candidates with an engineering or technical background who enjoy working with customers and shaping practical solutions.
If successful, this role has a clear pathway into owning the Marine Engineering sector within RS Aqua — becoming the commercial lead for a defined customer set and associated product lines.
We are not looking for a polished salesperson. We are looking for someone who can understand systems, ask good questions, work through ambiguity, and represent complex technology accurately and credibly to customers.
This is not a commission-first or transactional sales role. It is about judgement, structure, and long-term trust.
Marine Engineering focusYour customer world will typically include marine and coastal engineers, contractors, offshore surveyors and service providers, offshore energy and infrastructure organisations, ports & harbours, and environmental monitoring providers working in operational environments.
The technology focus is practical and deployment-led, including (but not limited to):
metocean and oceanographic sensors, wave and tide measurement systems, current profilers, positioning and navigation equipment, marine autonomous and robotic systems, data loggers, and ruggedised field instrumentation.
What you’ll be doingIn your first year, you will spend most of your time:
- Supporting technically complex quotations, proposals and tender responses
- Learning RS Aqua’s Marine Engineering-focused product portfolio and typical applications
- Supporting customer meetings, demonstrations, trade shows and site visits (UK, occasional international)
- Working with suppliers, engineers and operations to clarify specifications, integration constraints, lead times and delivery requirements
Maintaining accurate, well-structured CRM records and opportunity tracking - Producing clear technical commercial content such as application notes, capability summaries and customer-facing explanations
Over time, you will take increasing ownership of customer relationships and live opportunities, with the expectation that you become a trusted point of contact for a defined segment of the Marine Engineering market.
What success looks like in year one- You can explain our core products clearly and accurately, including their limitations
- You communicate with customers and colleagues in a calm, precise and professional way
- You elevate uncertainty early rather than guessing
- You improve proposal quality and reduce preventable technical or commercial errors
- You build credibility through understanding and delivery, not confidence alone
- Have a degree in marine engineering, mechanical/electrical engineering, physics, oceanography, environmental science, or a related discipline
- Can show evidence that you’ve taken responsibility and delivered something in the real world, beyond purely academic studies
- Enjoy practical problem-solving and translating requirements into workable solutions
- Care about accuracy, detail and professional reputation
- Are comfortable learning quickly and asking smart questions
- Are seeking a commission-first sales position
- Prefer scripted selling over developing a deep understanding of technical systems
- Are uncomfortable with detail-oriented work or consistent follow-through
- Expect to be fully proficient from day one rather than learning over time
- Are looking for a research role, or a role focused mainly on marine biology/aquaculture (this particular position is industry-leaning)
- Salary: £30–40k depending on capability, experience and progression potential
- Bonus: Eligible for participation in our sales bonus scheme after an initial settling-in period
- Benefits: 25 days holiday + public holidays, flexible working, supportive team environment
- Location: Predominantly based at Port Solent Marina, Portsmouth, UK (some remote working by agreement)
- Travel: UK and occasional international travel
Applicants must have the right to work in the UK. RS Aqua is unable to sponsor visas for this role.
All staff are required to successfully complete Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) checks.
