Assistant Quantity Surveyor – Balfour Beatty, @One Alliance

Location: Peterborough / Hybrid

Balfour Beatty plays a key role as part of the Anglian Water's One Alliance – a collaboration between Anglian Water and eight industry‑leading partners including Balfour Beatty, Barhale, Binnies, MMB, MWH Treatment, Skanska and SWECO. Together we deliver around 40% of Anglian Water’s capital investment programme.

We are looking for driven, ambitious individuals who want to be part of a transformative project. As an Assistant Quantity Surveyor you will support the commercial and cost management of projects from inception to close‑out, gaining experience in water infrastructure that benefits millions of customers.

What you'll be doing

As the new Assistant Quantity Surveyor you will act as the commercial conscience for the integrated delivery team, providing commercial support to both the delivery management and on‑site delivery teams. You will help control costs, maximise value, minimise future liabilities, and maintain quality and safety standards, while developing your soft skills in a dynamic environment.

Key responsibilities
  • Assist the Estimating team to provide robust estimates that align to scope and account for risks and opportunities, including analysis, data transfer to the Alliance Procurement system, and the Cost Base.
  • Collaborate with the Cost Manager, Procurement team, Construction Manager and Project Delivery Manager to prepare subcontracts, procurement strategies and ensure they reflect agreed scope.
  • Produce accurate live forecasting, reporting on the programme in accordance with the work breakdown structure and cost breakdown structure.
  • Monitor actual costs and assess them against baseline, value of work done, solution cost progress, affordability challenges and final outturn calculations.
  • Provide reports on actual costs versus estimates, identify reasons for variance, highlight, challenge and resolve variance against the latest plans.
  • Assist the Cost Manager in ensuring all project team members understand contractual arrangements to satisfy client and partner requirements.
  • Maintain proper records so financial information for audits and cost assurance is readily available.
Who we're looking for – Development Opportunity
  • Currently studying for, or have completed, a degree level (or equivalent) qualification in engineering, management or cost discipline.
  • Passion for pursuing a career in a commercial‑based role.
  • Excellent IT skills, specifically Excel.
  • Strong communication skills for a wide range of audiences.
  • Strong organisational and prioritising skills to support enthusiasm and a desire to learn.
