Senior Estimator – Civils Contractor

Location:

Remote working with occasional travel to the office in Hemel Hempstead
Reporting To:
Operations Director

Role Overview

The Senior Estimator will play a key role within the commercial function, responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for civil engineering and infrastructure projects. The position offers a predominantly remote working arrangement, with periodic travel to the Hemel Hempstead office and project sites as required.

Reporting directly to the Operations Director, the Senior Estimator will contribute significantly to bid strategy, cost planning, risk analysis and overall commercial decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

* Lead the preparation of detailed cost estimates for bids and tenders across civils, utilities and infrastructure works

* Review and analyse drawings, specifications and scope documents to identify cost drivers and commercial risks

* Produce accurate quantity take-offs, cost plans and pricing models

* Work collaboratively with operations, design and commercial teams to ensure robust and competitive submissions

* Evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotations and negotiate best-value solutions

* Identify and quantify risks, assumptions and exclusions within tender submissions

* Prepare tender programmes and ensure bids are completed within agreed timescales

* Provide commercial input during contract negotiation and award stages

* Support project handover to delivery teams, ensuring alignment with estimating assumptions

* Maintain market awareness of labour, plant, material costs and industry trends

* Contribute to the continuous improvement of estimating processes, systems and templates

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate is likely to demonstrate:

* Extensive experience estimating within the civils and infrastructure sector

* Strong technical understanding of civil engineering works, including utilities, highways, drainage and earthworks

* Proven ability to deliver accurate estimates for complex and high-value bids

* Strong commercial awareness and risk management capability

* Proficiency in estimating software and Microsoft Office, with advanced Excel skills

* Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills

* Ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities and meet deadlines

* A collaborative and detail-focused approach to work

* Full UK driving licence
