We are Rolls-Royce SMR, and we're doing something that's never been done before. We're revolutionising an industry - and that's a once-in-a-career opportunity for those excited by such a challenge. This is more than just a job this is a legacy.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Electrical Design Engineer to join our Electrical Systems team, working on one of the most complex and rewarding engineering programmes in the world. You'll be providing technical expertise across the lifecycle of electrical systems for our SMR Nuclear Power Plant - from system architecture and sub-system design to equipment specification and selection - all the way to the final verified design of the power station.
Working closely with multi-disciplinary engineering teams and applying a structured systems engineering approach, you will help deliver safe, reliable, and efficient electrical systems that meet rigorous regulatory, safety, and performance standards.

What we're looking for

  • Review and agree high-level electrical requirements, ensuring they are testable and verifiable.
  • Translate high-level requirements into validated system and component designs, capturing applicable design constraints and quality attributes.
  • Develop detailed electrical designs, working closely with verification teams to define test and validation activities.
  • Analyse electrical designs for functional behaviour, potentially using modelling and simulation, and develop tests to demonstrate compliance.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders - including regulators, suppliers, and customers - to discuss and review designs.
  • Identify and mitigate risks, maintain compliance with policies and processes, and ensure quality through technical reviews and design gate inputs.
  • Support standardisation and commoditisation of systems and components to drive efficiency across the programme.
  • Act as Responsible Designer or Intelligent Customer when managing work packages and contract partners.

Key selection criteria

  • Strong knowledge and experience across the electrical system design lifecycle - specification, design, assessment, verification, testing, installation, commissioning, and maintenance - ideally in safety-critical systems.
  • Good knowledge of electrical power distribution systems and components.
  • Knowledge and experience of common electrical design codes and standards.
  • Experience leading the development of design solutions from concept through to detailed definition, including trade-off studies and application of systems engineering methodologies (Model-Based Systems Engineering beneficial).
  • Ability to apply analysis methods to support concept definition and justify design solutions.
  • Experience presenting technical information in a compelling format to diverse stakeholders.
  • Degree-level qualification in electrical engineering (or related discipline) preferred equivalent experience considered.

Pay and benefits
We anticipate paying a salary of between £48,000 - £62,500 (DOE) plus:

  • Bonus - Performance-related bonus of up to 12.5%
  • Benefits Allowance - £2,200 per annum, enabling you to create a bespoke package
  • Pension - 12% employer and 6% employee contributions
  • Holidays - 28 days (+ public holidays) and the ability to buy or sell up to 4 days
  • Private Medical Insurance - BUPA single cover healthcare
  • £250 one-off payment for new starters for home office purchases
