Job Description & How to Apply Below

National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) is at the heart of energy in the UK. The electricity we provide gets the nation to work, powers schools and brings energy to life. Our energy network connects the nation, so it’s essential that it’s continually evolving, advancing, and improving.

As an Environmental and Sustainability Advisor, you’ll work closely with the Regional Safety and Quality Manager to bring our group-wide environmental and sustainability strategy to life. You’ll champion best practice across our operations, acting as a trusted partner to our Delivery Teams and support them in driving meaningful environmental performance and cultural change.

In this role, you’ll lead sustainability engagement on the ground, helping teams embed positive behaviours, improve environmental outcomes, and maintain strong SHE standards throughout every stage of project delivery.

Key Accountabilities
  • Carry out regular site visits and environmental walks, working collaboratively with site teams to identify issues and drive effective solutions.
  • Support project teams and influence contractors to deliver and comply with our environmental strategy, policies and procedures, promoting best practice and ensuring accurate reporting.
  • Engage during the project development phase to ensure contract submissions reflect our requirements and integrate NG Environmental & Sustainability goals from the outset.
  • Develop and share clear communications to keep the business informed about changes in environmental legislation, procedures and best practice—ensuring knowledge is shared across business units and the supply chain.
  • Promote a positive safety culture through visible, proactive and consistent behaviours.
  • Work collaboratively with others to ensure a coordinated approach and a shared understanding of roles, responsibilities and expectations relating to Environment and Sustainability.
  • Report all incidents, near misses and good catches, advising on appropriate actions to mitigate hazards.
  • Prepare monthly reports on environmental and sustainability performance and provide management information for review at relevant meetings.
  • Collate and present performance insights to management teams where valuable or provide mechanisms for self‑service access where appropriate.
  • Support environmental incident investigations, helping identify root causes and providing expert guidance on the legal framework, corrective actions and lessons learned.

We currently have two vacancies: one covering the South East and one covering London. To be effective in the role, you’ll ideally be based within the relevant region. Travel to project sites will be required, and you’ll have the flexibility to combine this with hybrid working from home.

What You'll Need
  • Proven experience in an environmental role, ideally within construction.
  • A relevant technical or professional qualification (Degree, ONC, Diploma or equivalent).
  • Membership of IEMA or another environmental professional body (desirable).
  • Strong understanding of environmental legislation and environmental management systems, particularly as they apply to construction.
  • A full, valid UK driving licence.
  • Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to communicate effectively, constructively challenge behaviours and build strong relationships at all levels.
  • Genuine passion for environmental sustainability, coupled with high levels of enthusiasm and drive to deliver positive outcomes.
  • Experience working with regulatory bodies and external stakeholders (preferred). What's in it for you?
    • Salary of £54,000 - £65,000 dependent on experience and capability (plus London Weighting Allowance for the London role)
    • Job Requirement Car
    • Annual Performance Based Bonus
    • 37 hour working week with hybrid working model between Home, Site and Office
    • 26 days annual leave, plus eight statutory days
    • The option to buy additional or sell holiday days
    • Generous contributory pension scheme – we will double-match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%
    • Financial support to help cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions, course fees, books, exam fees and time off for study leave – so long…
