Overview
This role offers the opportunity to work on critical infrastructure projects that support modern power systems. You will contribute to the design and delivery of protection and control solutions for high-voltage substations while collaborating with experienced engineers and multidisciplinary teams. The position provides exposure to complex engineering challenges and opportunities for professional growth.
Role Summary
As a Protection & Control Engineer, you will be responsible for designing technical protection and control solutions for Extra High Voltage (EHV) substation projects. These include both Air Insulated Substations (AIS) and Gas Insulated Substations (GIS) operating at voltages ranging from 11kV to 400kV.
The role can be based in Newcastle, Stockton-on-Tees, Leeds, or Manchester, with flexibility required to travel to client offices and project sites across the UK.
Key Responsibilities
Produce a comprehensive suite of protection and control system design drawings for systems from 11kV up to 132kV.
Develop innovative protection solutions to support the evolution of future smart grid networks.
Integrate protection and SCADA systems to deliver cost-effective and reliable design solutions.
Prepare all necessary engineering calculations and technical documentation.
Support the preparation of equipment specifications for project delivery.
Conduct site visits to assess project requirements and gather technical information.
Attend site meetings and provide design updates or revisions during project construction phases.
Review designs prepared by suppliers or clients to ensure they are technically compliant with current standards, legislation, and engineering policies.
Required Qualifications & Experience
HNC in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
Demonstrated experience in the design of protection and control schemes.
Strong knowledge of electrical networks and engineering standards.
Ability to interpret technical design documentation and specifications.
Experience working with major substation control equipment suppliers such as ABB/Hitachi, Siemens, or GE.
Familiarity with industry communication protocols including IECand IEC 60870.
Full UK driving licence.
