About the Role

Amazing infrastructure isn’t the only thing that gets built here. Incredible careers do too. Join Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering as a Site Engineer on the Sizewell C project and you’ll be part of one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure programmes. Working within the Geotechnical Sub-Alliance you will help deliver complex ground engineering works that prepare the site for the construction of the new nuclear power station on the Suffolk coast.

The scope includes major enabling works such as cut‑off walls, soil improvement, bearing elements and retaining structures. Using advanced construction techniques including piling, diaphragm walling, soil mixing and grouting, the team utilises specialist equipment to deliver safe, efficient and high‑quality results within a collaborative alliance environment.

Responsibilities

As a Site Engineer you will play a key role in supporting the day‑to‑day delivery of ground engineering work fronts, ensuring activities are carried out safely, efficiently and in accordance with programme, quality and commercial requirements.

  • Support the planning and management of day‑to‑day site activities across assigned work fronts, coordinate labour, plant and materials, and ensure compliance with Inspection and Test Plans, method statements, permits and other site documentation.
  • Deliver daily briefings and toolbox talks, maintain attendance and action records, contribute to incident investigations, and enforce safe systems of work.
  • Manage and maintain quality documentation; draft and implement Inspection and Test Plans, arrange inspections, raise and manage non‑conformance reports and maintain marked‑up drawings for hand‑over.
  • Support procurement activities: translate operational requirements into specifications, raise orders, manage deliveries, coordinate plant and material movements, assist with subcontract administration.
  • Track rig performance and production rates against targets, identify improvement opportunities, and highlight constraints or delays for corrective action.
  • Help maintain short and medium‑term look‑ahead programmes, support sequencing of works and monitor progress against key milestones; contribute to delay analysis and programme updates.
  • Assist commercial and contractual processes under the NEC4 alliance model: early warning notices, non‑compensation events, change events, quotations and cost control.
  • Take on leadership responsibilities on site, supervising small teams or apprentices, and maintaining a proactive working environment.
Qualifications
  • Experience in site or contracts engineering within construction or ground engineering sector.
  • Confident working with engineering drawings, specifications and coordinating site activities.
  • Strong communication skills for engaging with teams, project management and support functions.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver multiple work fronts in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience on complex civil or ground engineering projects using piling, diaphragm walling, soil mixing, or grouting is beneficial.
  • Understanding of NEC contract processes and programme management principles is advantageous.
  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Valid CSCS card; additional certifications such as SSSTS or SMSTS are beneficial.
  • Occasional weekend or night work may be required with shift rotations.
