You'll be part of a highly collaborative team delivering a wide range of significant highways, bridges, and infrastructure projects across the county for several local authority clients in the region.

Based in WSP's Exeter or Taunton offices, you will work within a team of established professionals with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of highway construction management in the county. You will be further supported by colleagues from across WSP who provide additional resources and specialist expertise to deliver high quality services.

Working closely with the Principal Highways Engineer and our wider multi-disciplinary team, you will play a key role in the technical delivery of projects, contributing your expertise to ensure high‑quality, efficient, and innovative design solutions. You will also support the development of our growing Highway Engineering design capability in Exeter.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop highway designs on multidisciplinary projects through various stages of the project lifecycle.
  • Ensure projects are delivered to programme, budget, technical standards, and legal requirements.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior engineers and technicians, contributing to their professional development.
  • Assist Project Managers with planning, programming, technical input, pricing of project briefs, proposals, and cost estimation.
  • Prepare and review design documentation, drawings, reports, and technical submissions.
  • Work across a portfolio of varied multidisciplinary projects simultaneously.
  • Coordinate with engineering and technician resources to deliver work packages effectively.
  • Collaborate with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Support site‑based activities on an ad‑hoc basis, including supervision and monitoring contractor compliance with contract requirements.
Qualifications & Experience
  • A passion for design and a drive to develop innovative, practical engineering solutions.
  • A degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience within a highway design environment.
  • Chartered Engineer preferred or working towards IEng or CEng status with a relevant professional institution.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary highway design across different project stages.
  • Technical knowledge in road geometry, junction design, active travel schemes, drainage systems, road restraint systems, and traffic signs and road markings.
  • Familiarity with relevant design standards including DMRB, Manual for Streets, TSRGD, and local authority guidance, including experience preparing drawings for technical approvals and departures from standards.
  • Proficiency in design software such as Autodesk Civil 3D, Bentley Open Roads Designer, Info Drainage and/or PDS.
  • Understanding of Designer's Duties under CDM regulations.
