About the Role

We’re looking for a Highways Inspector to join our UKCS Living Places team in Southampton, supporting the delivery of essential highway services across the city. This is a key role within our Southampton contract, where you’ll be responsible for maintaining the safety, quality and performance of the highway network in a high-profile environment.

Working across a variety of locations, you’ll carry out inspections, ensure compliance with health, safety and quality standards, and build strong relationships with customers and stakeholders. You’ll play an important part in delivering a safe and reliable service for the local community, while supporting our commitment to Zero Harm and operational excellence.

What you'll be doing

In this role, you’ll be at the heart of maintaining and improving the local highway network. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Carrying out highway safety inspections across Southampton, ensuring routes meet required standards and are assessed within agreed time frames
  • Investigating third-party claims relating to personal injury or property damage, gathering robust evidence to support outcomes
  • Conducting driven and walked inspections, identifying defects and ensuring appropriate actions are taken right first time
  • Supporting asset management activities through technical assessments and contributing to long-term network performance
  • Responding to urgent enquiries and supporting emergency service provision, including out-of-hours requirements
  • Working collaboratively with internal teams, contractors, and stakeholders including the local authority and community representatives
  • Attending meetings with councillors, residents and stakeholders, maintaining a professional and customer-focused approach
  • Promoting a strong safety culture, ensuring compliance with all health, safety and environmental standards
  • Acting as a positive ambassador for the business, delivering excellent customer service at all times
Qualifications and Experience

We’re looking for a proactive and detail-focused individual who is passionate about maintaining safe and efficient highways. You’ll bring:

  • Experience with in a highways environment, ideally in inspections or operational delivery
  • Knowledge of highway civils and traffic management
  • Experience working in a customer-facing environment and engaging with the public and stakeholders
  • An understanding of insurance or third-party claims processes
  • A full UK driving licence

You’ll also demonstrate:

  • A strong commitment to health and safety and high-quality standards
  • Excellent communication skills and a professional, customer-focused approach
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Reliability, integrity and a positive, solutions-focused attitude
  • A willingness to learn and continuously improve

Desirable (but not essential) qualifications include NRSWA, 12D Traffic Management, Safety Inspection of Highways, First Aid, SSSTS or CSCS Highway Maintenance.
