We have an existing opportunity to add a Forensic Materials Engineer to our Collision Reconstruction Team! By joining a highly creative, collaborative, and experienced team like Pario, the successful candidate will conduct root cause material failure investigations to support insurance and legal proceedings across various commercial, industrial, residential, and product industries.
The candidate will develop problem‑solving skills and technical background in materials science and mechanical engineering to determine failure mechanism, cause, and contributing factors of losses involving water leaks and flooding, fuel oil releases, building damage, vehicle collisions, mechanical breakdown, fires, personal injuries, and more.
This role is intended for an early‑career materials engineer on track for P.Eng. licensure and requires willingness to travel.
Role Responsibilities- Lead projects from start to finish, ensuring timelines stay on track
- Communicate directly with clients to confirm project scope, budget, scheduling, and findings
- Assess, analyze, and report on the origin and cause of material failures
- Interview witnesses and service personnel, obtain background information and documentation on a loss
- Attend sites and document evidence with photographs, measurements, and detailed notes
- Conduct materials characterization and analysis, including non‑destructive and destructive laboratory examinations of evidence
- Provide verbal and written reports to clients
- Minimum bachelor’s degree in Materials/Mechanical Engineering
- Graduate‑level degree in Materials Engineering or Materials Science is an asset
- Professional Engineering license or ability to become licensed in Ontario is required
- Must have a valid G license, access to a vehicle, and ability to work in remote areas and in a range of temperatures and weather conditions
- In‑depth knowledge of materials science (metals, polymers, ceramics, composites), microscopy (optical, digital, scanning electron), fractography, metallography, microstructure analysis, mechanical property testing, and other materials characterization, with hands‑on materials laboratory experience preferred
- Mechanical aptitude for component disassembly and/or machine shop experience is an asset
- Experience conducting technical literature reviews
- Proficiency in digital photography to document sites and evidence
- Ability to produce neat and legible handwritten notes, diagrams and sketches
- Proficiency in standard Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook & Excel)
- Excellent written and verbal presentation skills, and a good command of the English language
- Well‑organized, with ability to manage multiple projects and set priorities to meet deadlines, and a demonstrated track record of taking projects to successful completion
- Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to discuss project budgets with clients and maintain continuous communications throughout a project
- A positive, self‑driven attitude with willingness to learn and collaborate with colleagues
- Full access to Pario’s materials laboratory, featuring SEM/EDX, a Keyence digital microscope, sectioning, mounting and polishing equipment, hardness testers, and more
