Purpose of Role:
Weir Marine Engineering is currently looking for a Systems Safety & Environmental (SS&E) Engineer to join our Combat and Control Systems (CCS) team supporting the River Class Destroyer (RCD) Project. The SS&E Engineer will conduct System Safety and Environmental Engineering activities across the RCD Project, identifying hazards, quantifying risks, and recommending mitigations. Management of the hazard tracking system and production of Hazard Management Assessment Reports and Safety Case Reports are key activities.

The role requires collaboration with Royal Canadian Navy subject matter experts to support verification and validation of safety and environmental materials.

What You’ll Do
  • Conduct System Safety & Environment Engineering analysis across the entire RCD capability, using various formal methods to identify hazards, quantify risks, and recommend mitigation solutions complying with Canadian law, DND policy and international standards.
  • Provide support to lifecycle phase reviews, participate in system safety engineering working groups, and implement standards such as US MIL-STD-882E and Def‑Stan 00‑056.
  • Develop and review technical documentation, including safety management plans, hazard logs, hazard management assessment reports, safety case reports, system requirement specifications, interface control documents, and system design descriptions.
  • Maintain positive, collaborative relationships with team members and stakeholders, liaising with subject matter experts, DND customers, and suppliers.
  • Demonstrate commitment to zero‑harm behaviors and support the development of a world‑class safety culture.
What You’ll Bring
  • Mandatory:
    Canadian citizenship and a minimum of 10 years of continuous residence in Canada, and a Government of Canada security clearance.
  • Mandatory:
    Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Mandatory:
    Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Highly desirable:
    Knowledge or experience in safety engineering disciplines such as systems safety, functional safety, FMEA, software safety, or environmental engineering.
  • Desirable:
    Familiarity with data modelling languages and MBSE frameworks such as UML, SysML, DODAF, DNDAF and UAF.
