Assistant Quantity Surveyor – Highways
Location:
Near Darlington / North East
Employment Type:
Permanent
Sector:
Civil Engineering / Highways / Technology Infrastructure
Fulcrum Recruitment is working with a well-established and rapidly growing civil engineering and highways contractor that is looking to appoint an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to support its North East commercial team.
This is a permanent opportunity with a contractor delivering technology-led infrastructure works for highways, local authority and framework clients across the UK.
The work typically includes street lighting, traffic signs, electronic message signs, traffic signals, EV charging infrastructure, fibre and broadband networks, low-voltage connections, highways civils and associated infrastructure works.
The North East team supports a busy programme of projects across multiple client and framework regions, including longer-term schemes and a high volume of smaller reactive and maintenance works.
The Role
As Assistant Quantity Surveyor, you will work closely with an experienced Quantity Surveyor, supporting the commercial administration and cost control of live projects across highways, lighting and technology infrastructure.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with around 1–2 years’ experience in a commercial role who wants to build a strong foundation within quantity surveying.
The role would suit an Assistant QS, Trainee QS or Commercial Assistant who is already studying, or looking to start, an HNC, HND, degree or apprenticeship route in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline.
Project Types
Projects can include highways technology, street lighting, traffic signals, electronic signage, EV infrastructure, fibre and broadband networks, low-voltage connections, civil engineering works, local authority projects, reactive maintenance and framework-led programmes.
Project values can range from smaller works through to multi-million-pound schemes, with a mix of short-duration jobs and longer-term programmes.
Key Responsibilities
* Support cost control, cost/value reconciliations, forecasting, cost trackers and monthly commercial reporting.
* Assist with subcontract procurement, enquiries, comparisons, order placement, valuations, payments and account queries.
* Collate and maintain commercial records, including delivery tickets, timesheets, invoices, labour, plant, materials and supporting documentation.
* Support change control, variations, quotations, commercial submissions, change registers and contract administration.
* Work with site teams to gather measures, progress updates, evidence and information required for valuations and reporting.
* Maintain organised and accurate commercial records while supporting continuous improvement in cost control, reporting and communication.
Candidate Requirements
* Around 1–2 years’ experience in a commercial role within construction, civil engineering, highways or infrastructure.
* Background as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, Trainee Quantity Surveyor, Commercial Assistant or similar would be suitable.
* Basic knowledge or exposure to NEC3 / NEC4 contracts would be beneficial but is not essential.
* Strong attention to detail, good organisation skills and a proactive, solutions-focused approach.
* Competent with Excel, Microsoft Office and general commercial administration.
* Good communication skills and confidence working with site teams, office teams and internal stakeholders.
* Full right to work in the UK and ability to travel locally as required.
The Opportunity
This is a strong opportunity for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor who wants to develop within a supportive commercial team and gain exposure to highways, civils and technology-led infrastructure projects.
The role offers the chance to work across multiple smaller jobs alongside longer-running schemes, building experience in cost control, subcontract accounts, valuations, change control, reporting and commercial best practice.
It would suit someone keen to progress their career, continue studying and develop into a more rounded Quantity Surveyor over time.
Working Environment
The role is office-based near Darlington, with flexibility available by agreement, including up to two days working from home where suitable.
The business offers standard office hours, an early finish on Fridays and a friendly, professional culture with strong investment in training, mentoring and progression.
Package
The package includes a competitive salary, company benefits, structured development and progression support. Further package details can be discussed during the recruitment process.
