GKNs Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Filton, Bristol is a £32m state of the art technology research and manufacturing process development facility which is a hub for world-class innovative technology for the next generation of fuel-efficient aircraft.
It includes a collaborative space for research and development with universities, the UKs CATAPULT network and GKN Aerospaces UK supply chain, to help strengthen aerospace technology and support the UKs Industrial strategy. The Engineering Team Lead will be based at our GTC site in Bristol or in Cowes Isle of Wight, this is a newly created position for our development programmes in our defence portfolio.
The Global Defence organisations are aiming to be supporting UK MOD initiatives to remain at the leading edge of Air Systems development to protect its people, project influence and promote prosperity and their Combat Air Strategy defines how the RAF/Royal Navy seeks to create operational advantage to enable the UK to achieve its military and strategic objectives. In 2018, UK Defence Industries put in place an ambitious programme to develop next generation air combat technology as part of the UKs Future Combat Air System (FCAS) that will includes a 6th generation crewed platform (Project Tempest) complemented by un-crewed platforms and other effectors.
GKN is already a key partner in 6th Gen programmes and now intends to expand its position in the FCAS family of systems by developing aerostructure and associated systems products for various platforms with the aim to deliver increased multi-role combat capability in an accelerated timeframe, with high production rate capability, whilst also meeting stringent affordability challenges. GKN will be responsible for designing, manufacturing and assembling key components as part of an accelerated technology development programme that will include a number of flying demonstrators.
The Engineering Team Lead will manage the delivery of Engineering Work Packages/Tasks agreed with a Chief Engineer/Programme Manager (or equivalent) to meet overall Programme and Business Objectives. The Engineering Team Lead reports hierarchically, functionally and operationally to the Director of E&T or Chief Engineer (of the same Programme) and will lead a team of 10 to 20 colleagues. The project will operate from GKN facilities in Bristol and the Isle of Wight, there is the requirement to be flexible with monthly travel (within in the UK) when required to our site in Isle of Wight and customers visits.
We offer hybrid working the opportunity to work from home up to two days per week dependent on the needs of the business.
Job Responsibilities Delivery of the Engineering Deliverables meeting the applicable Technical Requirements (including Manufacturability, Certification / Qualification Requirements) against agreed Schedule and Cost Objectives. Implementation and Execution of Cost & Schedule Control: NRC Planning, Tracking / Control and Reporting through Earned Value Management (EVM). Support Chief Engineer in the Execution of Programme Risk Management by identifying Technical Risks and determining associated Mitigation Actions Initiating Corrective Measures in the Case of Deviations from the planned Schedule & Budget Objectives Managing Change & Scope Control.
Provides input to the internal Change Control Process, supporting the Chief Engineer in the Customer Change Control Board Process Providing day-to-day Operational Management to the Engineering Project Team. Ensuring Application of effective (Design-Build Team) Best/Working Practices & Standards and encouraging a culture of continuous improvement including Lean Initiatives Contributing to establishing Knowledge and Experience (Knowledge Management, Tool and Process Enhancements and Lessons Learned) for the Function.
Providing effective Communication within the (Programme) Team and with Stakeholders outside the Team. Acting as Link to other Internal Departments as Operations and Procurement to provide General Support and to achieve Specific Agreements on Manufacturing Philosophy, Design-to-Cost, Supplier Quotations, etc.…
