What we’re looking for

The Technical and Failure Investigation Department (TFI) provides world-class failure investigation services to global clients by carrying out engineering assessment and evaluation of systems and component failures to help marine and land-based asset owners and operators minimise business downtime. Using core engineering skills to identify and understand the root causes of failure, we provide customised solutions to allow recovery back to operation as part of a rapid response service.

Reporting to the Technical and Failure Investigation Department Manager, a key responsibility of this role is to carry out a wide range of technical and failure investigations which will include site investigation work and collaboration with our state-of-the-art materials laboratory in Chandler’s Ford. This is not a laboratory-based role. There is opportunity to work from home and visit the office/materials laboratory in Chandlers Ford as necessary.

The role
  • Provide technical support to the TFI team and other LR Advisory teams as required.
  • Produce deliverables within agreed parameters in an appropriate format and take responsibility to review other employee’s work as requested.
  • Present deliverables with internal/external clients at a senior level and suggest alternative solutions where appropriate.
  • Produce proposals and define required work to meet client expectations, ensuring consistency to established procedures.
  • Assess and recommend the time/value of the work to be undertaken for an internal/external client within an agreed fee/cost structure and within the commercial aspects of the contract.
  • Make recommendations based on client feedback to assist in service delivery improvement and help build the business.
  • Share knowledge with the team and advise colleagues based on reviews and own experience; build an internal network of contacts to gain knowledge from senior personnel within Lloyd’s Register.
  • Pursue Continuous Professional Development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • Mentore/coach other technical employees to achieve effective technical knowledge transfer and application.
  • Undertake project management where applicable, including monitoring project progress and spend against budget and contract requirements.
What you bring
  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years programme) or qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer.
  • Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the work.
  • Good general knowledge of marine and industrial power plant machinery, including internal combustion engines (mainly diesel, dual fuel and gas), electric motors, shafting, gearing, dampers, couplings, propellers, pumps & piping, steam plant etc.
  • Ability to apply knowledge and experience to a wide range of technical investigations on client vessels/sites in the marine and offshore and land-based industry providing timely solutions in line with client expectations.
  • Experience with in a technical specialism.
  • Good metallurgy knowledge.
  • Experience of performing RCA investigations.
  • Prepared to work away from home on jobs ashore or on ships in port and/or at sea in the UKI and worldwide.
Preferred, but not required
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution an advantage.
  • Working towards becoming a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer an advantage.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation techniques for data acquisition would be an advantage.
  • Familiarity with MATLAB for data post processing an advantage.
