Join us as a Construction Engineer in the Transport NSIP and Technical Team to support Suffolk’s infrastructure projects, including the Sizewell C development and other nationally significant works.
Responsibilities- Provide technical approval for major infrastructure projects, ensuring roads can be adopted as highways and protecting the Council’s interests.
- Check highway designs for developments to ensure that the proposed layouts and construction of highway improvements and new estate roads comply with SCC guidance.
- Inspect the construction of roads, footways and drainage to confirm compliance with highway construction standards, specifications and design guides.
- Work closely with colleagues across Transport Strategy to deliver seamless processes from consultation to project delivery.
- Negotiate with developers and consultants on technical solutions for road layouts, junctions, footpaths, drainage and street lighting.
- Apply up‑to‑date knowledge of legislation, health and safety, and technical specifications.
- Accurately record technical approval details and support the planning approval process.
- Represent Suffolk County Council at meetings and collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders, even in complicated and sensitive areas.
- Contribute to projects that improve lives and communities across Suffolk, with opportunities to expand knowledge into active travel and town‑wide transport planning.
- Relevant Level 5/6 qualification or considerable highway design experience.
- Commitment to our values and to promoting sustainable transport.
- Strong communication skills for engaging with a variety of audiences and the ability to solve complex and wide‑ranging problems.
- Experience in transport strategy, engineering and (ideally) construction site work.
- Good working knowledge of relevant legislation, technical frameworks and local government.
- Ability to manage your own time and work collaboratively.
- Ability to interpret drawings, specifications and technical documentation.
- Up to 29 days annual leave entitlement (pro rata), plus UK bank holidays and two paid volunteering days.
