Positions are available immediately with start dates staggered throughout the summer. The latest possible start date is July 4 to align with CSJP program timelines.
Work may take place at FEC’s site in Priddis, Alberta, and may include a mix of on-site and remote work depending on the role. Some positions require hands‑on outdoor work.
The OpportunityWe are seeking a motivated GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Specialist to support the development, enhancement, and management of spatial data systems for FEC’s projects and digital platforms.
This role is ideal for individuals in GIS, geography, environmental science, or related fields who want hands‑on experience applying geospatial tools to real‑world sustainability initiatives. A key focus of this position will be upgrading and expanding FEC’s interactive GIS platform (ArcGIS Experience Builder) to better visualize site data, environmental systems, and project impacts.
You will contribute directly to mapping, spatial analysis, and web-based GIS development while working alongside interdisciplinary teams.

GIS Development & Web Mapping
- Upgrade and enhance FEC’s interactive GIS platform using ArcGIS Experience Builder
- Improve usability, performance, and visual clarity of geospatial applications
- Design and maintain web maps, dashboards, and story maps
Spatial Data Management & Analysis
- Collect, clean, and manage spatial datasets related to land use, infrastructure, ecology, and energy systems
- Perform spatial analysis to support planning and environmental decision‑making
- Integrate field data (GPS, drone, survey data) into GIS systems
Sustainability & Site Mapping
- Map infrastructure elements such as energy systems, water systems, trails, and buildings
- Support ecological mapping including vegetation, topography, and drainage
- Contribute to visualization of sustainability metrics and project impacts
- Work with engineers, ecologists, and site teams to translate real‑world systems into spatial data
- Support creation of visual tools for education, outreach, and stakeholder engagement
- Document workflows and maintain organized GIS data structures
Eligibility Requirements
- Applicants must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or refugee
- Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Applicants must be aged 15–30 inclusive at the start of employment
Required
- Must be able to travel to the property or stay overnight on‑site, depending on accommodation availability (Priddis, AB)
- Ability to work with data, analyze spatial relationships, and present findings visually
- Background or studies in GIS, geography, environmental science, or related fields
- Strong interest in GIS, mapping, and spatial data analysis
- Experience with GIS platforms (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Preferred / Assets
- Familiarity with web mapping, dashboards, or geospatial visualization tools
- Experience collecting field data (GPS, drone mapping, surveying)
