Stantec is seeking a highly experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in rotating machines and power generation systems, supporting projects and clients across Atlantic Canada and beyond. The successful candidate will function primarily in an advisory, technical leadership, and peer review capacity, influencing major project decisions, guiding engineering standards, and supporting complex problem‑solving initiatives. The candidate may be based in any Atlantic Canada office and will collaborate with regional and national teams on strategic energy infrastructure projects.
YourKey Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Advisory
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert in rotating electrical machines (generators, motors, excitation systems) and power generation equipment.
- Provide senior technical oversight, guidance, and peer review for hydro, thermal, and combustion turbine generating stations.
- Guide the design and integration of generator auxiliaries and balance‑of‑plant electrical systems.
- Ensure protection, control, and monitoring systems related to generation assets comply with industry standards.
- Lead root‑cause analysis and troubleshooting for complex failures and performance issues in generators and associated systems.
Engineering Excellence & Governance
- Establish, review, and maintain engineering standards, specifications, and best practices for power generation electrical systems.
- Provide independent design reviews and technical assurance for major projects and critical equipment.
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and utility practices.
Project & Client Support
- Act as a trusted technical advisor to clients, supporting studies, condition assessments, refurbishment strategies, and new generation projects.
- Contribute to technical proposals, feasibility studies, and strategic planning initiatives.
- Support project teams by resolving highly complex technical issues and identifying optimal engineering solutions.
Mentorship & Knowledge Transfer
- Mentor power team members, providing guidance on complex technical matters.
- Lead internal knowledge‑sharing initiatives and contribute to capability development within the organization.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, vendors, and clients to ensure alignment on technical requirements.
- Represent the organization in technical discussions, design reviews, and industry forums where appropriate.
- Deep technical expertise in rotating machines, including large generators, motors, and excitation systems.
- Strong knowledge of power generation electrical systems, auxiliaries, and balance‑of‑plant.
- Experience with utility‑scale generation across hydro, thermal, and combustion turbine technologies.
- Proficiency in protection and control systems (e.g., SEL or equivalent relays).
- Ability to use power system analysis and modeling tools such as ETAP.
- Experience with medium and low voltage power distribution systems.
- Proven ability to provide high‑level technical leadership and advisory services.
- Experience conducting design reviews and engineering assurance.
- Skill in solving complex, multidisciplinary technical problems.
- Excellent communication skills for client engagement and technical reporting.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (Master’s degree considered an asset).
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with a Canadian Engineering Association; eligible in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
- 20+ years of progressive experience in electrical engineering within power generation and utility environments.
- Demonstrated experience in a senior advisory, lead engineer, or SME role.
