Overview
Principal Product Safety Engineer role with a leading global defence, security and aerospace company. Salary £70,000–£74,000 dependent upon experience.
Location:
Portsmouth/Frimley/New Malden or Bristol. The role can be based in Broad Oak, Frimley, New Malden or Filton and offers a hybrid working pattern. This position is for a 37-hour week with a 1pm finish on Fridays. The company creates more than 100 new inventions every year for customers in over 100 countries. The Combat System is central to platform integrity; you will help integrate these complex systems safely from design concept through to disposal.
As a valued stakeholder working alongside Design Technical Authorities, you will play a pivotal role in challenging the norm and bringing new ideas to the table across a varied and ever-changing portfolio of Combat System projects.
Responsibilities- Provide support to the function's Technical Authority teams with the management of hazards, risks and associated mitigations, and contribute to the development of the hazard log and the maturity of information contained within.
- Be responsible for product safety strategy/argument assessment against major subsystems or key complex technologies.
- Produce high-quality submissions including hazard logs, safety cases and safety plans.
- Organise and facilitate HAZIDs and review meetings, and contribute to other HAZIDs when required.
- Work with Technical Authority teams and embedded Safety Engineers to collate adequate product safety related evidence to support the safety case argument and acceptance via the Requirements and Acceptance Team.

- Knowledge of safety management processes and techniques
- Experience of working in more than one phase of the Engineering Lifecycle, with sufficient experience of design principles to enable a good understanding of adjacent phases and through-life engineering issues
- Awareness of customer defence standards such as: DSA-02, JSP
430, Def Stan 00-56, Mil Stn 882E, BS EN 61508 - Familiar with the principles of a Safety Management System
- Experience in writing technical documentation to an elevated level
- Experience in Product Safety within Software Systems would be advantageous
- Academic qualification in Engineering or related STEM subjects; professional qualifications to become Incorporated or Chartered Engineer through a recognised institution. Support to achieve the relevant accreditation.
