Location: Hinkley Point C, Somerset (Predominantly Site Based with Some Remote Working)

Westlakes Recruit is currently recruiting for an experienced Instrumentation & Control (I&C) Design Engineer to join a leading engineering contractor supporting the delivery of one of the UK’s most significant nuclear infrastructure projects at Hinkley Point

C. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a multidisciplinary engineering team delivering safety‑critical systems within the turbine halls of a major new nuclear power station. With an initial project duration of approximately three years and opportunities to transition onto future UK nuclear programmes, this role offers long‑term career prospects alongside technically rewarding work.

The Role

As an I&C Design Engineer, you will play a key role in the design, development and delivery of instrumentation and control systems from detailed engineering through to commissioning and project handover. Working within a collaborative engineering environment, you will develop high‑quality design packages, provide technical support throughout construction, and ensure all deliverables comply with stringent nuclear safety, quality and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Produce and review detailed Instrumentation & Control design documentation.
  • Develop hook‑up drawings, equipment schedules, material take‑offs and procurement information.
  • Prepare and review technical assessments, calculations and engineering deliverables.
  • Support engineering activities throughout the project lifecycle, from detailed design through commissioning and final handover.
  • Provide technical support to construction and installation teams during project delivery.
  • Respond to technical queries and support design changes where required.
  • Liaise with multidisciplinary engineering teams including mechanical, electrical, civil and control specialists.
  • Work closely with suppliers, subcontractors and client representatives to ensure successful integration of I&C systems.
  • Ensure compliance with nuclear quality assurance procedures, configuration management and engineering standards.
  • Maintain accurate engineering documentation and records throughout the project.
About You

We’re looking to speak with engineers who have experience within highly regulated engineering environments and a passion for delivering technically complex projects.

Essential
  • Strong background in Instrumentation & Control design within nuclear, power generation or other highly regulated industries.
  • Good understanding of field instrumentation and safety‑related systems.
  • Experience producing detailed engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and familiarity with E3D, PDMS or AVEVA E&I.
  • HNC/HND or Degree in Instrumentation, Electrical, Control Systems or a related engineering discipline.
  • Excellent communication and problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to delivering high‑quality engineering solutions.
Desirable
  • Experience working on nuclear licensed sites.
  • Professional membership with the IET, InstMC or another recognised engineering institution.
  • Knowledge of EPCC project delivery environments.
  • Experience with configuration control and nuclear quality assurance processes.
