POSITION OVERVIEW

This entry level to intermediate level role is a full-time position required to support our Materials Testing Center and Failure Analysis team. The primary goal of the material testing team is to evaluate materials and equipment failures to determine material properties, condition, and failure cause and to provide solutions for our clients. We specialize in materials and corrosion including high temperature, sour service, microbiologically influenced corrosion, and environmentally assisted cracking mechanisms.

We also provide corrosion and materials support and materials selection for emerging markets such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and a variety of renewable energy technologies. Our pressure equipment and pipeline divisions support compliance, inspection, and asset integrity services. This position is required to provide support to the laboratory team in terms of maintaining and setting up equipment and samples for testing. Ensuring clean work areas and performing maintenance and odd jobs around the Testing Center. It also requires moving, cutting and preparing samples for analysis. Field travel and testing in boilers and pressure equipment using in-situ metallographic and hardness testing equipment is required.

This role is hands-on and requires good physical ability and can lead to progression within Group 10 as this role is the foundation of learning for the Group 10 Materials Testing Center.

Note:

This role is based out of Group 10’s Materials Testing Center in Calgary, Alberta and occasional field travel will be required. In order to fulfill the duties of this role, the successful applicant will be required to work from the Testing Center on a full-time basis, therefore remote-work or work-from-home is not an option for this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

This role may include, but is not limited to, the following based on area of discipline:

  • Working in a laboratory environment with field testing periodically (some travel required).
  • Understand, maintain & operate materials testing equipment (hardness testers, Charpy impact testers, load frames, abrasion testers, autoclaves & associated equipment for metals, plastics & coatings).

Laboratory Equipment

  • Maintain and improve lab equipment and working areas on a routine basis.
  • Ensure all instruments, tools, equipment, and computers are maintained in top working condition and calibrated as required.

Laboratory Sample Preparation

  • Provide assistance with sample preparation including but not limited to cutting, sand blasting, mounting samples, and polishing samples.
  • Aid in the completion of analysis work including but not limited to, optical microscopy analysis, hardness testing, impact testing, tensile testing, detailed macro images and measurement of defects.
  • Manage the movement of materials in and out of the Materials Testing Center including chemicals for testing and the removal of waste.

Field Testing

  • As required, perform in-situ metallography in boilers and furnaces and field sample collection and testing.
  • Complete field work under the supervision and guidance of senior staff.
  • Assist with “general labour” tasks as required and have capability of moving heavy and awkward samples while using safe lifting techniques and equipment to do so.

EDUCATION

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in Metallurgy / Materials / Welding / Engineering or Engineering Technology disciplines.
  • APEGA and or ASET registration or eligibility.
  • 1 to 5 years experience in materials testing, failure analysis and exposure to the energy industry.

OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES

MUST HAVE’S

  • Mechanically inclined, hands on with samples & equipment and willing to get their hands dirty.
  • Have capability of moving heavy and awkward samples.
  • Have a valid Alberta Driver’s License & ability to travel as required.
  • PC skills with proficiency with the MS Office suite.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
