About the role

We are working with a leading renewable energy business that is looking to appoint an experienced Commercial Solar Designer on an initial 3-month contract basis.

This is an exciting opportunity for a technically skilled solar professional to support the design and technical development of commercial solar PV projects. You will be responsible for producing detailed system designs, optimising energy generation, and ensuring projects meet technical, regulatory, and client requirements.

The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting a growing pipeline of commercial solar projects, working closely with engineering, project delivery, and commercial teams to deliver high-quality renewable energy solutions.

This role offers the flexibility of remote working, with access to an office location near London if preferred. There is also potential for the contract to be extended or transition into a permanent opportunity following the initial engagement.

About the company

Our client is a well-established renewable energy organisation specialising in the delivery of sustainable energy solutions across the UK.

With a focus on making clean energy more accessible, the business delivers innovative solar and wider green technology solutions to commercial customers, helping organisations reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency.

As the renewable energy sector continues to grow, they are expanding their technical capabilities and looking for talented individuals to support their continued success.

Key responsibilities
  • Design and develop commercial solar PV systems (typically 50kWp+) using industry-standard software such as PV
    * SOL, Helioscope, AutoCAD, or similar.
  • Produce detailed technical designs, including site layouts, electrical schematics, stringing configurations, as-built drawings, and supporting documentation.
  • Complete system performance modelling, yield assessments, shading analysis, and optimisation studies to maximise energy generation and customer ROI.
  • Work collaboratively with sales, consultancy, engineering, procurement, installation teams, and project managers to ensure designs are technically feasible, cost-effective, and aligned with customer requirements.
  • Support installation planning, provide technical guidance throughout project delivery, and assist with grid connection applications, including DNO and G99 requirements.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant industry standards, including MCS, DNO requirements, building regulations, and health & safety standards.
  • Identify potential design risks, recommend solutions, and maintain accurate project documentation and design records.
  • Keep up to date with emerging technologies, industry developments, and regulatory changes to support continuous improvement of design processes.
What we're looking for
  • Proven experience designing commercial solar PV systems within a renewable energy, electrical engineering, or related environment.
  • Strong technical understanding of solar PV systems, including inverters, battery storage, and mounting solutions.
  • Experience using solar design software such as PV
    * SOL, Helioscope, AutoCAD, or similar.
  • Good understanding of electrical design principles and grid connection requirements.
  • Ability to interpret site surveys, technical drawings, and project documentation.
  • Strong analytical skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A genuine passion for renewable energy and supporting the transition to a low-carbon future.
What's on offer
  • Contract opportunity with an immediate start available.
  • Initial 3-month engagement with potential to extend or become permanent.
  • Day rate up to £350 per day.
  • Fully remote working, with office facilities available near London.
