About the Role
Senex Recruitment is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer for a specialist engineering company offering hybrid/remote working. The role combines home-based working with attendance at the company's Melksham, Wiltshire location for up to two days per week. Overnight accommodation will be provided when required. Applicants should be based within a reasonable travelling distance of Melksham, or be comfortable travelling there regularly - suitable locations may include Bath, Bristol, Swindon, Chippenham, Trowbridge, Devizes, Salisbury, Newbury, Cirencester, Gloucester, Cheltenham, Reading, Oxford and Southampton.
This is a varied position for a practical engineer who can manage the full design lifecycle, working with fabrication partners and machine shops, supporting supplier selection and purchasing, and maintaining technical documentation. You will report directly to an experienced Technical Director.
Key Responsibilities- Developing, modifying and optimising mechanical designs using Solid Works or a similar 3D CAD package
- Producing accurate production drawings, CAD models and associated engineering information
- Converting existing and legacy engineering data
- Designing components and assemblies with manufacturability, quality, safety and cost in mind
- Working with machine shops, steel fabricators and other manufacturing partners
- Reviewing supplier proposals and resolving technical or engineering queries
- Helping select materials, including steel, components and associated equipment
- Providing practical technical support to the sales team in response to customer enquiries
- Compiling, reviewing and maintaining product technical files
- Producing user manuals, operating instructions and other technical documentation
- Professional experience in mechanical design in a manufacturing or closely related engineering environment
- Strong 3D CAD skills, ideally using Solid Works or another leading CAD software
- Experience producing detailed mechanical designs and manufacturing drawings
- An understanding of machining, welding and heavy steel fabrication
- Experience sourcing engineering materials and components, and managing external suppliers
- A BEng or MEng in Mechanical Engineering, Design or a related discipline, or equivalent, or an HNC/HND/apprenticeship with relevant industry experience
- Ability to attend the Melksham, Wiltshire site for up to two days per week and travel occasionally to suppliers and customers
- Circa £55,000 per year
- Flexible hybrid arrangement, predominantly remote with up to two days per week at the Melksham facility
