Position: Design Lead – (Sports Infrastructure & Field of Play)
Location: Brighton and HoveAs our international design portfolio continues to grow, we are looking for an experienced Design Lead from a civil engineering, MEP, building services or infrastructure design background to join our design team.
Previous sports-surface experience is not essential. We are looking for someone with strong engineering design and multidisciplinary coordination experience who can apply those skills to the specialist world of stadium and Field of Play design.
The successful candidate will lead and coordinate the technical delivery of major sports infrastructure and Field of Play projects in the UK and internationally.
Working alongside STRI’s specialist consultants, designers and BIM team, you will translate specialist performance requirements into coordinated, buildable engineering solutions and take responsibility for design delivery from early concept through detailed design, IFC and construction support.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES Design & Technical Delivery
1. Lead the multidisciplinary design and coordination of stadium, training facility and sports infrastructure projects.2. Coordinate Field of Play systems including drainage, irrigation, water infrastructure, undersoil heating, ventilation, monitoring and associated mechanical and electrical interfaces.3. Coordinate STRI’s design with architecture, structural, civil, MEP, landscape and utility disciplines.4. Develop and review drawings, BIM models, engineering details, technical schedules and design documentation.5. Prepare and coordinate performance specifications, bills of quantities (BoQs), basis of design documents, end-of-stage reports and technical submissions.6. Review technical calculations, contractor submissions, RFIs and shop drawings during design and construction.7. Ensure the complete design package is coordinated, technically robust and buildable.Project & BIM Coordination
1. Take ownership of design deliverables, programmes and technical priorities for allocated projects.2. Coordinate designers, BIM technicians and STRI specialist consultants to achieve project requirements.3. Work within BIM-led multidisciplinary environments, including federated models and Common Data Environments.4. Coordinate project deliverables against TIDPs, MIDPs and wider project programmes.5. Monitor design progress against agreed scope, programme and allocated project hours.6. Support project managers in identifying scope changes, additional services and variations.7. Lead design reviews and identify technical, coordination and construction risks.Client & Stakeholder Engagement
8. Act as a key STRI design interface with clients, architects, engineers and contractors.9. Represent STRI at design team meetings, coordination meetings and technical workshops.10. Prepare and deliver client presentations explaining design development, technical solutions, risks and recommendations.11. Manage technical queries and coordinate responses with STRI’s specialist consultants.12. Build strong working relationships with clients and multidisciplinary project teams.13. Liaise and collaborate with internal teams to ensure excellence in terms of project delivery for clients and internal and external communications.PERSON SPECIFICATION
We are particularly interested in candidates with 5+ years’ experience in an engineering design environment, ideally from the following –
- Mechanical engineering
- MEP / building services
- Drainage, water or infrastructure
- Multidisciplinary engineering consultancy background
You should have:
- Strong engineering design and multidisciplinary coordination experience.
- – Experience interpreting and coordinating drawings, pipework, drainage, levels, plant and utility interfaces.
- – Experience working within BIM-led project environments.
- – Familiarity with AutoCAD and/or Revit, with Civil 3D or Navisworks experience advantageous.
- – Experience preparing technical documentation, reports and specifications.
- – Strong communication, organisation and problem-solving skills.
