Role Context

The Mechanical Engineering Technician will apply practical testing and troubleshooting experience to the development of benchmark tasks that reflect genuine mechanical laboratory and production environments. The assignment focuses on creating technically credible scenarios involving instrumentation setup, sensor readings, calibration data, failure modes, and diagnostic decision-making. The role requires a strong understanding of how mechanical tests are prepared, monitored, interpreted, and documented.

Each task must include realistic data, defensible conclusions, and clear evaluation standards so technical outputs can be assessed against professional expectations rather than simplified textbook answers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create realistic technician-level tasks involving mechanical test setup, instrumentation, measurement, and failure diagnosis.
  • Develop technical datasets including sensor outputs, test logs, calibration records, inspection findings, and failure reports.
  • Define correct troubleshooting pathways based on observed data and equipment behaviour.
  • Recommend logical next-step actions after reviewing test results, anomalies, or mechanical performance issues.
  • Build detailed grading rubrics with 35 or more evaluation points covering instrumentation, data interpretation, troubleshooting, and failure analysis.
  • Document test procedures, equipment configuration, observations, results, and diagnostic conclusions clearly.
  • Use real-world examples from laboratory, production, maintenance, or prototype testing environments.
  • Interpret sensor readings and identify patterns indicating abnormal operating conditions or equipment degradation.
  • Evaluate whether instrumentation and measurement methods are appropriate for the intended mechanical test.
  • Identify potential calibration, setup, acquisition, or process errors that could distort test results.
  • Create realistic failure scenarios involving mechanical components, assemblies, test rigs, or prototype systems.
  • Work with CSV files, spreadsheets, PDFs, and structured technical datasets when developing benchmark materials.
  • Apply quality-control thinking to distinguish valid measurements from unreliable or inconsistent data.
  • Ensure each evaluation task contains sufficient technical complexity to reflect professional technician work.
  • Deliver project outputs independently while meeting required weekly submission standards.
Ideal Profile

Ideal Profile Candidates should ideally bring at least four years of hands-on experience in mechanical testing, laboratory operations, production support, prototype development, maintenance, or a comparable technician environment. An associate degree, trade qualification, technical diploma, or equivalent credential in mechanical engineering or a related discipline is preferred. Strong practical experience with instrumentation, sensors, measurement devices, and data acquisition systems is important.

Candidates should be comfortable preparing test setups, collecting reliable data, interpreting results, and diagnosing equipment or process failures. The role is particularly suited to professionals who have worked with calibration records, mechanical test logs, sensor datasets, inspection reports, and failure documentation. Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills are essential, together with the ability to explain why a failure occurred and what technical action should follow.

Candidates should also be capable of producing structured documentation and detailed evaluation criteria. Experience working independently and handling technical files such as CSVs, spreadsheets, PDFs, and test reports will support success in the remote contractor environment.
