EC&I Designer

£45 per hour | Inside IR35 | Predominantly Remote | 1-2 Days per Week in Abingdon or Warrington

Work on a Major UK Defence Infrastructure Programme

We are currently recruiting for an experienced EC&I Designer to support a major infrastructure programme delivering critical capabilities for the UK's submarine and warship programmes.
This is an excellent opportunity for an EC&I Designer with strong CAD and AutoCAD experience to work on a technically challenging programme within a highly regulated environment, supporting the delivery of a new submarine defuelling capability.
The role is predominantly remote, with an expectation of 1-2 days per week in either Abingdon or Warrington, making it an attractive opportunity for experienced designers seeking flexibility without compromising on the scale and importance of the work they are involved in.

The Project

The role sits within the Major Infrastructure Projects (MIP) Business Unit, supporting significant infrastructure investment at Devonport.
A key element of this programme is 14 Dock Readiness, which brings together a number of interconnected projects designed to establish the infrastructure required to support the defuelling of out-of-service submarines.
Within this programme, the Submarine Defuel Delivery Project (SDDP) is responsible for delivering the Reactor Access House (RAH) and the associated tools and systems required to enable submarine defuelling.
As an EC&I Designer, you will join the Engineering Team responsible for the design and implementation of the RAH and its associated systems, contributing to a programme with an overall value exceeding £100 million.

The Role

Working closely with the Design Manager and wider engineering team, you will support the delivery of EC&I design activities across the project.
Your responsibilities will include:

Delivering EC&I design activities to the required scope, quality, schedule and cost.
Producing detailed EC&I design drawings using AutoCAD.
Supporting the development and delivery of EC&I work packages.
Updating drawings and documentation through to as-built status.
Applying effective quality management arrangements and working in accordance with established business and technical procedures.
Ensuring engineering activities are appropriately documented, with accurate records maintained.
Supporting configuration management and quality control throughout the design lifecycle.
Working collaboratively with engineering teams, contractors and other project stakeholders.
Supporting the effective communication and management of engineering risks and ensuring appropriate controls are in place.
Applying sound engineering design and safety practices throughout the delivery of your work.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for an experienced EC&I Designer who can demonstrate:

Proven experience designing EC&I systems, ideally within a nuclear or other highly regulated environment.
Extensive experience producing EC&I drawings and technical design documentation.
Strong AutoCAD experience.
Practical knowledge and understanding of technical design development.
A sound understanding of engineering design and safety principles.
Experience working within structured quality, health & safety and engineering procedures.
Good working knowledge of relevant engineering software and computer applications.
The ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a wider multidisciplinary engineering team.

Essential Qualification

HNC in EC&I Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

Why This Opportunity?

This is more than a conventional EC&I design position. You'll be contributing to a high-profile UK defence infrastructure programme, working on engineering systems that will support the future operational capability of the UK's submarine fleet.
With £45 per hour, predominantly remote working and only 1-2 days per week required in Abingdon or Warrington, this role offers an excellent combination of technical challenge, programme significance and flexibility.
