About our group:

Seagate products help more people store, share, and protect their valuable digital content. With 97% of the world’s information being stored on hard drives, the rapid growth of digital data makes Seagate more important every day.

Seagate is where the future is read and written, with continuous innovation proving that a hard drive is not "Seagate-40 years of Data Storage Innovation" . Find out how we are shaping a new era of storage as we craft the data sphere.

As an industry leader, Seagate provides unique career opportunities to be part of today’s major technology shifts. They can be found around the globe and on our website.

The Seagate Derry / Londonderry Manufacturing site has been open for 30 years this year. We have over 1750 people working in our facility which is among the most advanced in the world, in the design, development, and volume manufacturing of recording heads. These recording heads write information onto and read information from the recording disc, within the data storage device.

In the role of Laser Design Modeling Engineer, you will be working within the Advanced Technology Research and Development team. This team is part of the broader Recording Head Organisation. Partnering with the worldwide wafer development and test / characterization teams our responsibility is to develop and the recording heads for future generations of Hard Disk drives.

About the role - you will:
  • Carry out computational modelling and design of advanced semiconductor laser architectures for next generation Mozaic 4+ (HAMR) read-write heads.
  • Use LaserMOD/Crosslight/Harold etc, FDTD, Lumerical Interconnect and other similar methods to simulate laser performance within the HAMR integrated photonic system.
  • Carry out data analysis to support modelling conclusions, making closure assessments and recommending improvements.
  • Work with R&D engineers and scientists to plan experimental builds and testing of the proposed designs.
  • Improving existing modelling capabilities and development of new modelling methodologies.
  • Collaborate with adjacent teams and internal customers to ensure that the proposed future designs will meet the performance and reliability requirements of the future product roadmap.
  • Keep abreast of developments in the field of III V semiconductor laser research.
  • Collaborate with external research partners to translate emerging laser, photonics, and materials research into practical technology options.
About you:

If you hold a BSc or MSc, this role “does not meet” the criteria set by the Home Office for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker Visa route; therefore, visa sponsorship cannot be offered. Tou must that full Right to Work Documentation to work in the UK.

If you hold a PhD, the role “does meet” the criteria, and visa sponsorship can be offered.

  • Knowledgeable in the area of, III V semiconductor laser physics and laser design.
  • Knowledgeable in the area of, III V semiconductor laser design for reliable, stable performance at high temperatures and robustness to external optical feedback.
  • A good communicator with excellent presentation and written skills.
  • A strong team player who works effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Able to set own course in projects and make timely decisions.
  • Motivated and excited by technology and the challenge of going beyond what exists today.
