Substation Engineer - Grid Modernization

Our client is seeking an innovative Substation Engineer to drive critical grid modernization efforts, operating remotely with a key presence in the Bloemfontein area. This role is instrumental in enhancing the reliability, efficiency, and resilience of the power grid by focusing on substation design, upgrades, and integration of new technologies. You will work closely with grid operations and planning teams to ensure substations meet the demands of a evolving energy landscape .

• Lead the design, specification, and commissioning of substation electrical systems, including transformers, switch gear, protection relays, and control systems.
• Develop single-line diagrams, schematics, and detailed engineering drawings for substation projects.
• Perform fault analysis , protection coordination studies, and ensure compliance with grid interconnection standards.
• Manage substation upgrade projects, ensuring minimal disruption to existing operations.
• Collaborate with vendors and contractors throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring quality and adherence to specifications.
• Stay abreast of emerging technologies in smart grids and grid automation to inform future designs.

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in substation design and engineering for power utilities or the energy sector.
• Strong knowledge of power system protection principles and relevant industry standards (e.g., IEEE, IEC).
• Proficiency in substation design software and simulation tools.
• Experience with SCADA systems, communication networks, and automation technologies for substations.
• Excellent project management, problem-solving, and communication skills, with proven remote work capabilities.
