Subsurface Safety Engineer

Our client, a key contributor to the Oil & Gas industry, is seeking an experienced Subsurface Safety Engineer to join their remote team. This fully remote position allows you to leverage your expertise in designing, implementing, and managing safety systems for subsurface oil and gas operations from anywhere. You will be responsible for ensuring the integrity and functionality of safety-critical equipment such as subsurface safety valves (SSVs), emergency shutdown systems (ESD), and related controls.

Your work will involve detailed risk assessments, failure analysis, and the development of strategies to prevent catastrophic failures and protect personnel and the environment. This role requires a deep understanding of wellbore mechanics, fluid dynamics, material science, and relevant safety standards. We are looking for a highly analytical and safety-focused professional who can thrive in a remote work environment and collaborate effectively with global engineering teams.

• Design, specify, and evaluate subsurface safety systems and equipment (e.g., SSVs, ESD systems, chokes).
• Conduct hazard identification (HAZID) and hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies related to subsurface operations.
• Perform quantitative risk assessments (QRA) and consequence modeling for subsurface safety scenarios.
• Develop and implement integrity management strategies for safety-critical subsurface equipment.
• Analyze failure data and investigate incidents involving subsurface safety systems.
• Ensure compliance with relevant industry safety standards and regulations (e.g., API RP 14C, ISO standards).
• Provide technical guidance and support to drilling, completions, and production teams on safety matters.
• Develop testing and maintenance procedures for subsurface safety equipment.
• Prepare technical reports, safety case documentation, and recommendations for improvement.
• Stay abreast of advancements in subsurface safety technology and best practices.

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum of 6 years of experience in subsurface safety engineering, well integrity, or related roles within the Oil & Gas industry.
• In-depth knowledge of subsurface safety devices, ESD systems, and their operational principles.
• Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and safety case development.
• Familiarity with relevant industry codes, standards, and recommended practices for well safety.
• Experience with failure analysis and incident investigation techniques.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a remote, multidisciplinary team.
• Proficiency in relevant engineering software and simulation tools.
• Must be eligible to work remotely from South Africa or a comparable location.
