Senior Process Safety Engineer - Remote

Our client, a globally recognized entity in the chemical manufacturing industry, is seeking an experienced Senior Process Safety Engineer to join their esteemed virtual team. This is a critical, fully remote position, allowing you to leverage your expertise in process safety from anywhere in South Africa, supporting operations that serve regions near Bloemfontein
. You will be responsible for ensuring the highest standards of safety are implemented and maintained across all process operations, from design through to decommissioning. This includes conducting thorough hazard analyses, developing robust safety procedures, and leading incident investigations. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of regulatory requirements and industry best practices in process safety. You must be adept at collaborating remotely with diverse teams, including engineering, operations, and management, to foster a strong safety culture.

This role demands exceptional analytical skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to influence decision-making through clear, data-driven communication. We are looking for a proactive leader who can champion safety initiatives in a virtual-first environment.

• Lead and conduct Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), including HAZOP, LOPA, and What-If studies.
• Develop, implement, and maintain Process Safety Management (PSM) programs in accordance with regulatory standards.
• Perform risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies to reduce process safety risks.
• Investigate process safety incidents, determine root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
• Develop and deliver process safety training programs to relevant personnel virtually.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable local and international safety regulations and standards.
• Review process designs and modifications for safety implications before implementation.
• Maintain process safety documentation, including safety procedures, permits, and reports.
• Act as a subject matter expert on process safety for engineering and operational teams.
• Promote a proactive safety culture through effective communication and engagement across remote teams.

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum of 8 years of experience focused on process safety in the chemical, oil & gas, or petrochemical industries.
• In-depth knowledge of process safety principles, standards (e.g., OSHA PSM, EPA RMP), and best practices.
• Proven experience facilitating PHAs and conducting risk assessments.
• Strong understanding of chemical processes, equipment, and instrumentation.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and investigative skills.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for remote collaboration and reporting.
• Demonstrated ability to influence and lead safety initiatives in a virtual setting.
• Proficiency with safety software and data management tools.
• Must be legally authorized to work in South Africa and capable of performing all duties remotely.
