About Blythe Development

Blythe Development is a 100% employee-owned, licensed general contractor headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. Founded in 1989, we specialize in site work, road construction, and golf course construction throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. With more than 900 employees, we self-perform approximately 80% of site groundwork, including clearing, grading, utilities, drainage, concrete, structures, stone base, and asphalt paving.

About the Role

The CAD Technician – Data Prep for Surface Models prepares accurate digital terrain and construction models that support grading, site-development, roadway, utility, and paving operations. Working from contract drawings, survey data, specifications, and field information, this role builds, reviews, and maintains machine-control and layout-ready files for use by project teams, survey personnel, and field operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare existing-ground, proposed-grade, and finished-surface models from civil plans, survey files, specifications, and design data
  • Create and organize linework, break lines, alignments, profiles, corridors, surfaces, and related CAD data for field use
  • Develop machine-control and construction-layout files for grading, utilities, drainage, roadways, curb, stone base, and paving operations
  • Perform quality-control checks for elevations, slopes, offsets, boundaries, layer standards, units, coordinate systems, and file completeness
  • Identify plan conflicts, missing information, and model discrepancies and coordinate questions with project managers, estimators, survey personnel, engineers, and field teams
  • Incorporate approved revisions, addenda, field changes, and updated survey information into current models and drawings
  • Maintain clear file structures, version control, naming conventions, data backups, and model documentation
  • Export and convert files into formats required by survey, GPS, machine-control, estimating, and construction systems
  • Support quantity takeoffs, earthwork analysis, constructability reviews, and troubleshooting of model-related field issues
  • Follow company standards for accuracy, safety, confidentiality, and timely delivery
Qualifications
  • Associate degree, technical certificate, or equivalent experience in CAD, civil engineering technology, surveying, construction technology, or a related field
  • 1- 5 Years experience preparing civil construction drawings, terrain models, or machine-control data for site-development or heavy-civil projects

  • Working knowledge of grading plans, contours, spot elevations, profiles, cross-sections, utilities, drainage, and roadway geometry
  • Ability to read and interpret civil plans, specifications, survey data, and coordinate-system information
  • Strong attention to detail, file-management discipline, problem-solving ability, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines with limited supervision
  • Preferred: Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D and experience with Trimble Business Center, Trimble machine-control systems, Bluebeam, Agtek, or similar modeling and construction-data software
  • Preferred: Experience with earthwork modeling, quantity calculations, survey workflows, and GPS-enabled construction equipment
Compensation
  • Competitive salary
  • Annual bonus potential
  • Vehicle allowance
Benefits
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)
  • Paid time off
  • 401(k) plan with employer matching
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, disability, and supplemental insurance programs
