Nuclear Safety Analyst
Job Description
The Nuclear Safety Analyst role focuses on nuclear analysis and modeling rather than traditional plant mechanical design. You will work alongside experienced nuclear safety specialists to support advanced reactor and fuel development projects, performing a mix of research and customer-focused work. Assignments range from fundamental engineering calculations to detailed reactor analyses using specialized nuclear safety-analysis software. This position offers the opportunity to work on advanced nuclear technologies, contribute to real reactor safety analysis, and develop expertise with industry-leading analysis tools in a flexible, fully remote setting.
Responsibilities- Perform nuclear safety and engineering analyses for advanced reactors and nuclear systems.
- Model reactor and system thermal-hydraulic behavior under a variety of operating and safety conditions.
- Analyze heat transfer and fluid behavior in nuclear systems, including core and safety-system performance.
- Use specialized engineering and nuclear-analysis software such as RELAP5-3D and TRACE to simulate reactor response.
- Support analysis of reactor and core behavior under normal operation, transients, and postulated accident scenarios.
- Perform calculations that support nuclear reactor safety, performance, and design decisions.
- Verify calculations rigorously and assess whether results are physically reasonable and consistent with engineering principles.
- Document methodologies, assumptions, input models, calculations, and conclusions in a clear and traceable manner.
- Write technical reports and white papers that communicate analysis approaches, results, and implications.
- Develop presentations and communicate technical findings to internal teams, customers, and external stakeholders as appropriate.
- Collaborate closely with lead technical experts and engineers to refine models, interpret results, and solve complex technical problems.
- Support advanced reactor and fuel customers as they work through U.S. NRC and DOE-related requirements and expectations.
- Contribute to both research and development initiatives and customer-funded projects, balancing innovation with practical deliverables.
- Engage in ongoing learning to deepen expertise in thermal-hydraulics, nuclear safety analysis, and specialized industry tools.
- 05 years of experience in the nuclear field, nuclear analysis, or closely related engineering work.
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Nuclear Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience or knowledge of RELAP5 and TRACE for nuclear thermal-hydraulic and safety analysis.
- Solid experience in one or more of the following: fluid dynamics, heat transfer, nuclear physics, or structural mechanics.
- Demonstrated ability to perform complex engineering problem solving and quantitative analysis.
- Strong technical writing skills with the ability to produce clear, well-structured technical reports and documentation.
- Effective verbal communication skills for presenting technical findings and collaborating with engineering teams.
- Ability to work independently on analysis tasks while also contributing effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to adapt to changing technical problems and evolving project requirements.
- Strong verification mindset with a focus on checking, validating, and questioning analysis results.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word for preparing reports and technical documentation.
- U.S. citizenship.
Skills & Qualifications
- Interest in developing deep expertise with specialized nuclear analysis tools such as RELAP5-3D, TRACE, MCNP, VIPRE
01, and FAST. - Interest in advanced reactor and fuel technologies and their associated safety and licensing challenges.
- Motivation to participate in research and development activities that advance state-of-the-art nuclear safety analysis.
- Interest in publishing research findings and presenting at conferences or workshops.
- Desire to build strong industry relationships and professional networks in the nuclear sector.
- Comfort working in a technical, calculation-heavy environment with a strong emphasis on analytical rigor.
This role offers a 100% remote work arrangement, providing significant flexibility in where you perform your work. Much of the team works remotely, and you will collaborate virtually with experienced engineering staff on a mix of independent analysis and team-based projects.
