Lead Mechanical Engineer - HVAC Systems

Our client, a prominent engineering consultancy specializing in building services, is looking for a Lead Mechanical Engineer with extensive experience in HVAC systems. This is a fully remote position, allowing you to leverage your expertise from any location. You will lead the design and development of innovative and energy-efficient HVAC solutions for large-scale commercial, industrial, and residential projects. This role requires strong technical leadership, a deep understanding of thermal dynamics, air distribution, and a proven ability to manage projects from inception to completion.

The ideal candidate will be a seasoned professional adept at mentoring junior engineers and collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

• Lead the design and development of complex HVAC systems, including air conditioning, ventilation, and heating, for various building types.
• Perform detailed calculations for heating and cooling loads, air and water system design, and equipment selection.
• Develop P&IDs, schematics, system layouts, and specifications using industry-standard CAD and BIM software.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant building codes, standards, and energy efficiency regulations.
• Conduct site surveys and feasibility studies for new projects.
• Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources for HVAC design components.
• Collaborate closely with architects, electrical engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure integrated design solutions.
• Review and approve shop drawings and submittals from contractors.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior mechanical engineers and design staff.
• Stay informed about the latest advancements in HVAC technology and sustainable design practices.

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in HVAC system design, with significant experience in a lead or senior role.
• Proven expertise in HVAC design software (e.g., Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP, IES VE).
• In-depth knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and building systems.
• Experience with energy modeling and sustainable design principles (e.g., LEED).
• Strong understanding of building codes and standards (e.g., SANS, ASHRAE).
• Excellent project management, leadership, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple complex projects concurrently in a remote setting.
• Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng) registration is highly advantageous.
