As an ECAD PCB Design Intern, you will assist in the design, development, and analysis of rigid and rigid-flex PCBs and flex cables.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Create and revise low to mid complexity PCB designs including schematic capture, board geometry confirmation, placement/layout, stackup, and design definition
- Perform prescribed design for manufacturing analysis (DFMA) (e.g. netlist analysis) on low to mid complexity PCBs; confirm revisions with portfolio lead or project engineer based on results
- Follow the ECAD configuration management standards for PCB definition (Siemens EDM, Windchill)
- Solve problems utilizing electrical engineering principles, methodologies and approaches
- May also include support to the ECAD Library team creating passive and active PCB library parts per commercial product specifications including symbols, cells (aka footprints, pads), padstacks, part metadata, and 3D models.
- Support may also include support to the ECAD Software Assett Management Team, such as assisting in creating job aids for PCB design processes, library data improvements, some script writing, and evaluating new or existing pcb design software or related software.

About Our TeamThe Electrical Design Group is responsible for providing knowledgeable and capable resources to develop and create PCB and flex cable product definition in support of our nation's security programs. We partner with engineering teams across the lab to produce innovative solutions. We communicate PCB and flex cable design options and recommended approaches to product development teams, stakeholders, and manufacturing partners. The department's primary capabilities include schematic capture and physical layout of PCBs and flex cables, interacting with vendors to procure quick turn prototype circuit boards, and design for manufacturing (DFM) and signal integrity analysis of PCB designs.
We provide a positive and inclusive work environment where staff can master new skills, deliver optimal value, and achieve their career goals.
Sandia National Laboratories is the nation's premier science and engineering lab for national security and technology innovation, with teams of specialists focused on cutting-edge work in a broad array of areas.
