Mechanical Design Engineer - Consumer Electronics

Our client, a dynamic and fast-growing company at the forefront of innovative consumer electronics, is seeking a talented Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team in Mossel Bay, Western Cape . This role focuses on the design and development of cutting-edge products that combine sophisticated technology with user-centric design. You will be involved in the entire product lifecycle, from initial concept generation and feasibility studies to detailed design, prototyping, and mass production support.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for consumer products, a strong understanding of material selection for aesthetics and performance, and proficiency in CAD tools. • Design and develop mechanical components and enclosures for consumer electronic devices using CAD software.
• Create 3D models, 2D manufacturing drawings, and Bill of Materials (BOMs).
• Work closely with industrial designers to translate aesthetic concepts into manufacturable designs.
• Select appropriate materials (plastics, metals) based on performance, cost, and aesthetic requirements.
• Conduct design-for-manufacturability (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) reviews.
• Build and test prototypes, iterating designs based on performance feedback and validation.
• Collaborate with electrical engineers to ensure proper integration of mechanical and electronic components.
• Work with manufacturing partners to resolve production issues and ensure quality standards are met.
• Perform tolerance analysis and create detailed specifications for component manufacturing.

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• 3-5 years of experience in mechanical design, with a focus on consumer electronics or product design.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., Solid Works, Fusion 360).
• Experience with injection molding, die casting, and sheet metal fabrication processes.
• Understanding of material properties, including plastics and metals.
• Familiarity with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Experience with rapid prototyping techniques (3D printing) is beneficial.
• A portfolio showcasing relevant design projects is highly desirable.
