This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Principal Resource Adequacy Planning Engineer based in the United States. Join a team dedicated to strengthening electric grid reliability across the Western Interconnection. As Principal Resource Adequacy Planning Engineer, you will lead advanced probabilistic resource adequacy studies and provide technical guidance on critical planning decisions.

You will use SERVM to conduct complex Loss of Load Expectation (LOLE), Effective Load Carrying Capability (ELCC), capacity accreditation, and planning reserve margin analyses. Combining deep technical expertise with strong stakeholder engagement, you will help utilities and industry partners understand analytical findings and their implications. You will also establish modeling standards, mentor technical professionals, and advise senior decision-makers. This remote opportunity offers a highly visible role at the intersection of power system planning, grid reliability, and industry collaboration.

Accountabilities

Responsibilities

You will lead the technical development and delivery of resource adequacy studies while serving as a trusted advisor to stakeholders and senior decision-makers. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead complex SERVM studies covering LOLE, ELCC, capacity accreditation, and planning reserve margins.
  • Recommend study assumptions, sensitivities, and methodologies, working with participants to build understanding and alignment.
  • Serve as a primary technical liaison for members, committees, vendors, regulators, leadership, and board representatives.
  • Translate complex analytical findings into clear technical reports, presentations, board materials, and defensible recommendations.
  • Build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships by addressing technical questions, resolving concerns, and explaining implications for resource adequacy programs.
  • Establish quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) processes and model-governance standards.
  • Review modeling work and promote consistent technical methodologies and documentation practices.
  • Mentor engineers and analysts, supporting their technical development and strengthening team capabilities.
  • Identify emerging reliability risks and resolve complex or precedent-setting analytical challenges.
  • Represent the organization at stakeholder meetings, workshops, and industry forums.
Requirements

The ideal candidate combines extensive experience in probabilistic resource adequacy modeling with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences. Required qualifications include:

  • Typically 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in resource adequacy, generation or transmission planning, integrated resource planning, power system analysis, or electric markets.
  • Recent, hands-on experience leading complex SERVM studies, particularly involving LOLE, ELCC, capacity accreditation, and planning reserve margins.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership in managing complex studies, establishing QA/QC and model-governance standards, mentoring professionals, and resolving novel analytical challenges.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting technical findings to boards, regulators, committees, or executive audiences.
  • Ability to explain complex modeling methodologies and analytical results clearly, defend technical recommendations, and engage effectively with stakeholders from different backgrounds.
  • Advanced proficiency in analytical tools and programming languages such as Python, SQL, R, MATLAB, or Excel.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Energy Systems, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or a related quantitative discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of resource adequacy practices within the Western Interconnection.
  • Previous experience working with a Western resource adequacy program, an ISO/RTO, an electric utility, or a similar organization.
  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Operations Research, Statistics, or a related field.
Benefits
  • Annual salary ranging from $175,325 to $199,225, depending on experience and qualifications.
